Coach Stallings talks about the 1992 national championship season, including the beat down of Miami in the Sugar Bowl.

Alabama fans that admire Coach Stallings like I do need to read his book "Another Season". I highly recommend it. The book is about his son Johnny and raising a child with downs syndrown. It talks about football from cover to cover but it is not necessarily a football book. The book is about a father and son relationship. The father just happened to head coach at Alabama. It has a lot of Alabama football stories too. There is a chapter that talks about the 1992 season. If you like Coach Stallings you will enjoy the book.

One of my favorite stories in the book was when Johnny was a small boy and CGS was an assistant coach for the Cowboys. CGS was going to introduce Johnny to Coach Landry and he had told him several times who Coach Landry was and that he should address him as Coach Landry. When they met Coach Landry shook Johnny's hand and told him it was nice to meet him. Johnny replied "It's nice to meet you too Tom".

Good stuff. I have been meaning to pick that book up for a long time. I miss getting to see Johnny with his dad at different events. It takes a special couple to be able to raise a child with a disability, and Coach and Mrs. Stallings certainly are that kind of a couple. You could just see the love on CGS' face when Johnny was with him.

Stallings did a great job with the team.  He knew the stengths and weakness of the team.  Like he said the team health was crucial.  I do want to bring up this unpoplular part however.  Many of those players were recurited by Bill Curry, who I think was putting together a talented football team.
Finally, for you other old timers, the music on the soundtrack, does it remind you of an old TV program like the Twiglight Zone or 77 Sunset Strip?

thought this was interesting

The Daily Bama Blog
Doing research for magazine story, found Alabama's 2011 defense was first in nation to allow fewer than 200 yards since the 1992 Tide.

What little French I can read suggests this prior post has something to do with child pornography.   Angry

Head Coach: Gene Stallings

Final Ranking: 1st (AP and UPI).

Permanent Captains: Derrick Oden, George Teague, George Wilson, Prince Wimbley

All Americans: DE John Copeland, DE Eric Curry, CB Antonio Langham, S George Teague (second team).

All Southeastern Conference: DE John Copeland, DE Eric Curry, LB Lemanski Hall, CB Antonio Langham, TB Derrick Lassic, LB Antonio London, LB Derrick Oden, C Toby Shiels, S George Teague, PK Michael Proctor (second team), OG George Wilson (second team).

Statistical Leaders: Rushing: Derrick Lassic (905 yards, 178 carries); Passing: Jay Barker (132 of 243 for 1,614 yards, 7 TDs); Scoring: Michael Proctor (37 conversions, 19 FGs, 94 points); Receiving: David Palmer (24 catches for 297 yards, 1 TD); Tackles: Lemanski Hall (70); Interceptions: Antonio Langham (6), George Teague (6).

Key Stat: Alabama led the nation in total defense (194.2 yards per game) and rushing defense (55.0 yards per game).

The Skinny: No Alabama team ever sneaked up on a national championship like the 1992 Crimson Tide. Even after an 11-1 season in 1991, hardly anyone mentioned ‘Bama in the pre-season title buzz. In time, the whole country learned about Alabama’s smothering defense—led by All-American bookends John Copeland and Eric Curry—and an offense, led by the steady hand of Jay Barker, that wasn’t flashy but didn’t beat itself. After completing an undefeated regular season and knocking off Florida in the first SEC Championship Game, the Crimson Tide headed to the Sugar Bowl as a gigantic underdog to No. 1-ranked Miami…and won a convincing 34-13 victory that clinched a consensus national championship.

Quote: “In the beginning, it was like walking on eggshells around here,” Stallings told a reporter after winning the national championship. “We came into a situation where there was a lot of uncertainty. I never looked at it as having a big weight on my shoulders or anything like that, but I guess a lot of people did.”

Headlines: In 1992, former Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was convicted of rape…Arkansas governor Bill Clinton was elected president…Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Show…Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida…and The Czech Republic was founded.

Soundtrack: The year’s music included Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston), I’ll Be There (Mariah Carey), Layla (Eric Clapton), Man on the Moon (R.E.M), Achy Breaky Heart (Billy Ray Cyrus), and Walking on Broken Glass (Annie Lenox).
