Balancing two birdies with two bogeys, former Alabama standout Bud Cauley shot an even-par 71 today as he made his pro debut in the first round of the U.S. Open in Bethesda, Md.

Cauley, who is skipping his senior season with the Crimson Tide, shot even par on both the back nine and the front side. He played the back nine first on the Blue Course at Congressional Country Club and started with two pars. He birdied No. 12, a par-4, and stayed at 1-under until he shot a five for a bogey on No. 18.

The afternoon players are still on the course but even par is an excellant score. Very few players are under par. Cauley currently is tied for 24th but only 1 shot out of a tie for 7th. He is only 3 shots off the lead.

This was a great first round in not only his first major but his first pro tournament. I hope he has a solid round tomorrow and mades the cut for the weekend.

It will be interesting to see if the winner will be under par. This course is only going to be tougher each day and it is very long, I 'm guessing the leaderboard will have many changes over the next three days.

Bud is holding on at the US Open. He is -1 after the 8th hole. He is in a tie for 8th at the moment. This is unreal for his first tournament. He has the tough part of the course coming up. The projected cut line is +4. TV is not giving him any love, I have not seen him yet.

I hope he gets a chance to grab some hot dogs when he takes the turn. Otherwise, all that beer from the front nine will start kicking in and...

This is the pros. They have kielbasa at the turn not hot dogs. You must be playing public courses. ;D

Bud is playing extremely well, if he could just get some of those birdie putts to fall.

McIlroy has really put on an exhibition, this kid has all of the shots. He has 36 holes to go, we'll just have to wait and see if the Masters comes back to haunt him, hopefully not.

Bud is not playing well he is playing good. He is -1 with thru 14 holes at the US Open. Unless he falls apart he is going to make the cut. Roll Tide

This year's Masters wasn't the first time for RM to fall apart on Saturday/Sunday.

I don't expect him to win but he is good good position to make the cut. I will pull for any Bama guy at this point. He is on the leaderboard at the US Open.

If he makes the cut he'll get plenty of TV love tomorrow. RTR

McIlroy and Yang should be a fun match to watch tomorrow. Cauley has impressed me with his ability to get up and down. I felt when the tournament started that even par would bring you in a big paycheck and he's right there to do that.

Bud had a rough day Saturday. He shot a 3 over 74 to put him at +4. He had a 7 on the difficult par 4 eleventh.

All in all he is doing good in his first pro start. Making the cut was his goal I'm sure.

I looked for him yeterday, but no luck. RTR IDK his start time, but he may have been finished by the time the network broadcasted. I don't get the golf channel.

He got no TV love except one clip where they showed him sink a birdie putt and told a quick story about him and showed several pitchers.

#11 is one bad hole to play, Johnny Miller is quick to say that it is a big time round changer. He tees off at 10:40 am cdt today.

Bad back nine for Bud today. He shoots a 40 on the back and finishes at +9. He should still pick up a nice check. He made the cut in one of the toughest fields in golf. His future looks good to me.

I hope he's the next American phenom. We need one. I can't believe the fall-off in American talent in individual sports.  :-\

I agree, there's a big gap between the European players and the American players. I don't know how it is in Europe, but for a kid to grow up on a golf course in America, an average income won't pay for it.

I was up there for the Open. Bud hit the ball really, really well or real good depending on your perspective.  He kept lipping out his putts.  He played the 2nd day with Jason Day and although Day was a good bit longer Bud hit the ball straighter.  However, Jason Day made every putt he looked at and nothing went in for Bud.  The final day he played with Gary Woodland who is unbelievably long and Woodland made several putts and Bud made none.  When Bud gets his putter going he'll be making some big $$$.  I wish I was 21 with that much talent.  Heck, I wish I was 21 or I wish I had that much talent at any age...just give me one or the other.

Drive for show and putt for dough is the old saying, hopefully he will get some help with his putter right away. I think he has a bright future.
