Title: Alabama Baseball Travels To Auburn (Saturday 3:00 CSS)
Post by: pmull on March 28, 2013, 08:11:41 AM
This is a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series. I assume to avoid playing on Easter Sunday. The Saturday game is on CSS at 3:00. Bama is 5-1 in SEC and playing well. The barn is 0-6 and desperate for a series win.

Quote
The Alabama Crimson Tide (16-10, 5-1 SEC) will complete a seven-game road swing when it travels to Auburn, Ala., for three games against the Auburn Tigers (15-10, 0-6 SEC) this weekend. The series begins on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST, from Plainsman Park. Game two will be Friday at 6 p.m. CST, and the series wraps up on Saturday with a 3 p.m. CST, first pitch.

All Alabama baseball games throughout the 2013 season will be broadcast by the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN). All three games of the Auburn series will be broadcast on 95.3 The Bear with Chris Stewart and Lee Tracey providing the play-by-play. Livestats will also be available on RollTide.com. There will be a live webcast for the Thursday and Friday games through the subscription package on www.auburntigers.com. Saturday’s game will be televised on CSS with Matt Stewart and Joe Beckwith calling the action.

Alabama had its six-game losing streak snapped on Tuesday night after losing to UAB, 1-0, when the teams played at the Hoover Met. In its most recent SEC action, the Tide posted a road series sweep at Georgia, winning 6-3 on Friday and Saturday, before posting a 3-0 win on Sunday. Auburn is coming off an 11-2 loss to Troy on Tuesday night. The Tigers are looking for their first SEC victory after being swept by Vanderbilt and LSU to open the year.

Bama got a very good game out of starting pitcher Charley Sullivan. He pitched 8 innings and gave up one earned run. He struck out 7 and walked one.

We got 6 runs on 11 hits. We continue to swing hot bats.

We go to 17-10 on the season and 6-1 in SEC play. Auburn falls to 0-7 in the SEC.

Game 2 Friday at 7:00.

I know it is still early in the season and we have not played the best SEC teams yet but I am very surprised how much our team has improved since last year.

We are hitting .260 as a team. We have some very good freshman in the lineup but our best hitters were with us last year. Ben Moore .310, Brett Booth .310, Austen Smith .301 and Kenny Roberts .286. One of my concerns with CMG last year was I could not see improvement as the season went on. Last years players are better this year and the freshman are getting better. I like what I see from our offense.

Defense we look very good. Brett Booth has really matured behind the plate. He is holding runners on 1st base this year. He has already throw out more baserunners than our team did all last year. The freshman trio of White (SS), Overstreet (2B) and Salem (CF) make us very good up the middle. We have a good double play combination and a guy who covers a lot of ground in center field. We have made 31 errors in 27 games. Compare that to 46 errors by our opponents. We are also making tough plays that were hits last year.

Pitching has been solid. I thought going into the year pitching would be our strength. So far we have a good weekend rotation of Sullivan, Keller and Turnbull. Castillo has been good as a closer. We have decent middle relief. We have a team ERA of 3.16. Compare that to our opponents 4.22.

It is a long season and we have a long way to go but  I like what I see from this team. CMG was on the hot seat this year. So far he and his staff are doing a good job.

What a difference a year makes. We are 18-11 overall and 7-2 SEC. At this point last year we were 9-19 and 1-8 SEC. We went 0-15 on the road last year. So far we are 5-1 on the road with two series wins. We have three series wins after three weekends. Last year we won three series total while losing seven.

We are off to a good start. We are in second place in West trailing only 8-1 LSU. Vandy in the East is also 8-1 so we are third overall.

Our SEC schedule gets more difficult. We have played three series against three of the bottom teams. We host Arkansas (6-3) this week for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series. Thursday's game is on ESPNU.

We play SE LA at home on Tuesday.

Thanks for the numbers pmull.

Sounds like a 6-3 SEC Arkansas team will be a good measuring stick for us to see how much progress we've really made since last year... but so far so good!

I hope we can keep improving...
