Title: Arkansas vs Alabama This Weekend
Post by: pmull on October 16, 2013, 09:40:43 AM
Has anybody heard about the SEC sponsored BBQ in Tuscaloosa this weekend? Yes there is a game. Arkansas will show up and the game will be played Saturday night at 6:00.

I can not remember an Arkansas game with less built up and interest than this one. We opened SEC play for years against the Hogs and it was a good measuring strick for our program. It appears Bobby Patrino wrecked his bike and the Arkansas football program at the same time. They have gone from a Top 10 team to the bottom of the SEC West.

We have won six stright over Arkansas. It is going to be the same way next week against Tennessee. We may not like these programs but it is more fun to beat them when they are a good team. In past years this would be considered the meat of our schedule. These days we are four touchdown favorites. The entire fan base is looking ahead to the LSU game.

It will still be fun. I will be glued to the TV and the fortunate ones that get to go to the game will have a great time. It is just not the same when winning is not as important as had bad we beat them.

Exactly! It's like beating Vandy or Kentucky, it leaves an empty feeling & no real sense of accomplishment.

While I agree that Arky and UT are not the challenges they once were, I can't say that I get an empty feeling over any Bama win. They are all good wins to me.

I think if there was ever a good year for that to happen, it is this year. It is allowing our younger and less experienced players to gain much needed experience, and so far it's paid off. I fully expect Bama to be ready for LSU as a result of this.

....and I think this weekend will look something like this in T-town......

If you get a hollow feeling after a win, just go back and watch the 2012 A&M game.

Folks, we're riding atop the crest of Alabama's highest tide.  Enjoy it!

You're misstating or don't understand my point. Do you really get excited when we beat Georgia State? Really? Do you believe it is an accomplishment to be proud of? Do you celebrate such a "great" victory?
Beating someone who is competitive, like A&M, LSU, Georgia, Va. Tech is something special. Beating Georgia State, Kentucky, & others means almost nothing, except that we can overwhelm a pathetic football team. Kinda like watching high school football team beat a 7th grade football team. Do you think the rest of the nation or any fan base is impressed by games like that? Just wondering.

When I started this thread it had everything to do with Arkansas being down and nothing to do with not enjoying Alabama wins. Arkansas and Tenn having a bad year is causing us to have a bad schedule.

Exactly the point I was trying to make in a more specific manner. Playing Louisville's schedule is nothing to be pumped about. Playing and beating competitive teams is a thrill and adds to the excitement of the game. Rolling over a corpse provides no pleasure or satisfaction, especially if it was once considered a rivalry game.

Although Tennessee's program is down, I get tremendous satisfaction out of beating them.  Always have, always will.

Having lived for 30 years in the midst of volunteer country probably has something to do with that.

On the other hand, Arkansas, not so much.

I love Alabama football.

I enjoy watching the play calls, the special teams, the QB play, how the defense adjusts, etc.  I played, so I watch the players who played my position.  I don't watch it for the score.  I watch the game, the team, the coaching.

There's so much more than the score.  And "yes" I enjoy even the wins over lesser teams.  Sorry you do not.  I'm not trying to change your mind, just stating my opinion.

Roll Tide.

I agree with Chechem.  Our team should be improving every week, regardless of who we play.  There are so many things to look at to see if we are making progress other than who the opponent is or the score.

Case in point: the fumbles and dropped passes we had last week against UK.  UK had nothing to do with those.  I have been talking about ball security all year with these young guys.  It was only a matter of time before we started losing some fumbles.  This week I am anxious to watch those guys again to see if they have learned the proper technique to secure the ball.  We may or may not have fumbles this week, but you can see if they are doing it correctly even if they get lucky and don't have a fumble this time.

In short, CNS teaches them to play to a standard.  Each week I watch to see how we are measuring up to that standard.  A lot of times it is the lesser opponents that will tell us quite a bit about where we are with our attitude, technique, etc.  We already know we have the talent to play with anybody.

First, we are not playing Louisville's schedule.  One of their toughest opponents was Kentucky.

Second, the games are easy because Bama is just that good.  You see Georgia struggle to beat Tennessee.  You see Texas barely beat Iowa State.  If Bama were not as good and focused, it might get pushed in some of these games.

And third, Bama has several young players getting experience.  The team is still learning to play together, learning their assignments, improving each game.  This is not the same Bama team that we saw at the beginning of the season.  I think it's a good thing Bama has the opportunity to get better, improve on things.  At the beginning of the season, people were saying we would have lost to LSU or Georgia playing the way we were playing.  But now, the team has started to gel, and I don't think anyone has those thoughts anymore.

When I was in college during the Bryant era, yeah, I was young and didn't enjoy the blowouts so much.  But after having watched Bama go through some tough times -- sitting in the rain for that Arkansas overtime loss, sitting in cold wet weather in Tuscaloosa to watch us lose to the Barn, travelling to Nashville for the Music City Bowl and sitting in sleet to watch us lose to Virginia Tech -- I enjoy every game, even the blowouts.  Bama is building a dynasty.  Enjoy it while it lasts, because every dynasty eventually comes to an end.

So you guys would be OK playing a Conference USA schedule as long as we are winning and getting better each week?  :dunno:

I love winning but I get a real thrill out of the big games. We just don't have enough "big" games on our schedule this year IMO.

I enjoy watching Bama beat anyone. Even the lesser teams. I attended the Ga. Southern game a couple of years ago and paid a lot of money to take my family to the game. If the UT Chattanooga game is PPV, I will pay to watch it, if I'm not going to the game. As Chech and SC have posted, there is an awful lot to watch other than the score, and I have no problem with a 48-7 beatdown of Kentucky, UT, Arkansas or Hickory Bluff School for Arthritic Elves. RTR!!!

from a watching from home on TV point of view , I agree , it's hard to get
up for these games ...

no hollering and screaming at the TV , or very little anyway
and the only real challenge this year so far has been Texas A&M
so yeah , it's been a little boring in that aspect
but we are winning , and no loss to La. Monroe embarrassment to deal with .

I believe we are so good , even with the young guys , that we
won't have many games that are heart stoppers , then adding
a less than challenging schedule this year for whatever reason
doesn't help either  ...

everyone here has made great points that I agree with
I'll chalk it up to  "it's just one of those years" ...

just for fun ?
I'll bet a loss would charge everyone batteries  :lol2:

NO , I didn't mean that

When Awbren or UT are "down" I really enjoy beating them by a few dozen points probably more than when they have competitive teams.  I just hate those two schools in particular and when Bama stomps a mud-hole in them then walks it dry...I'm in heaven. 8)

Not at all.  But that is not what we have here.  Some years we have it a little easier.  Other years we have an insane schedule with almost every SEC opponent getting the week off before our game.  That same UT team was down in 2009 and they almost beat us.  We have no control over whether we will be playing a top ten Arkansas team led by Petrino or a bottom feeder under a first year head coach.  In spite of that though, we can still play to a standard, improve, and get ready for the big fights that are coming up down the road.  After the schedules we've had the last couple of years, I'm perfectly happy with this year being a little bit easier.

Does anybody remember how hollow it felt when we beat ULM, ooppss wait we didn't beat them.
Is it possible that Arkansas could have that one great day as a ULM did? I myself just can not get to over confident with anybody. It has been said to many times that on any given day anybody in the SEC can beat anybody else. I believe it. Just saying, we should be pumped and keep these young men who read our articles pumped. JMHO. RTR!

Exactly right, but that applies only to the SEC schedule. That's why I like the scheduling of teams like Clemson, VT, etc. We pick up Florida on our SEC schedule next year, a major challenge when compared with Kentucky and start with West Virginia. It looks like Coach Holgerson might not last past next year.

Whoa Nelley! I have not bought into the 9 game SEC schedule, since it probably means the end of good non-conference games. However, this new 4 team playoff might encourage the scheduling of better foes since they said the strength of schedule would carry major weight.

Well, I had to read this thread twice just to make sure that I actually read what I did the first time. Being the #1 team in the country and complaining about the schedule? Folks, I have heard it all now.

I bet I could run a survey across thte NCAA world and ask how many would like to trade their team and schedule for Bama's team and schedule, do you think there would be any takers? I can remember when our schedule seemed so tough and Bama fans complaining about all the other teams having cream puff schedules and being ranked so high and even complaining about all the teams having a bye week before playing Bama and now our schedule is too weak. The blame has to be on Nick Saban, who else would want such a cream puff schedule because the man isn't much of a coach nad has to play these weaker teams to be successful.

I hope I'm not making anyone mad for expressing my opinion because that is all it really is. If everyone in this world felt the same way about everything, it would be quite boring to say the least.

As Chech stated in an earlier post that the Bama fans are on a magic carpet ride and should be cherishing every minute of it. I couldn't agree more, this success won't last forever and we all should embrace it regardless of who the team is playing. Sometimes these lesser teams are the only ones that had an open date and that's how that all happens. Sometimes though they help a fellow coach and friend out with his program and I don't se anything wrong with that.

Now that I feel better, I'm headed to the meat market in the morning to get ready for our little tail gate party, the other side of a football game that I love so well regardless of who the opponent is. Roll Tide!!!! ;)

I never complained about our schedule other than I think we can do better than Georgia State and Chattanooga. I said Arky and Tenn being down makes our schedule softer. That is a fact. I want those two teams on our schedule every year. I just think it is more fun to play them when they are competitive.
