Stoutland came from Miami to replace retired assistant Joe Pendry, who was a member of Saban's original UA staff in 2007 and the only position coach any of UA's current offensive linemen had ever known at the college level. Likewise, Rumph also replaced a member of Saban's first UA staff - defensive line coach Bo Davis - who took a similar position at the University of Texas. Rumph came from Clemson and quickly earned praise from Saban for his teaching skills and ability to relate to players.
Stoutland's ability to relate to players was of no small importance, either.
"Jeff did a fantastic job when he came in here of winning the players over and developing their faith and trust and confidence," Saban said. "I don't think it's been a problem, and he's done a really good job with the guys in helping them improve."
