BATON ROUGE, La. -- Halfway through the 2013 season, sophomores Texas A&M and Missouri have just one loss between them, proving that bigger does mean better in the competitive Southeastern Conference.

L'Damian Washington and the Tigers have taken the SEC East by storm this season. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said he had no doubt Missouri has its "sights on playing for the championship in Atlanta."
When the Aggies and Tigers began SEC play a season ago, few doubted the addition of the two schools would bring more television viewers to the league's games from Texas and Midwest. Still, there were questions about whether adding a pair of Big 12 teams would dilute the quality on the field in the mighty SEC, winner of seven straight football national titles.

"It made our league better," Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

Added Florida coach Will Muschamp, the former defensive coordinator at Texas: "It doesn't shock me at all."

While some saw it coming, others have been a bit surprised by the quick ascension of the newcomers in the league standings.

"Both Texas A&M and Missouri are much improved from when I was in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State," LSU coach Les Miles said.

The promise of greater TV ratings seems to be playing out as predicted. A few weeks ago, CBS announced its broadcast of No. 1 Alabama at then-No. 6 Texas A&M -- the Aggies' only loss -- earned the highest ratings for a CBS regular season college football game in 23 years.

Whooda thunkit? A&M was a surprise team last year. Mizzou this year. I don't think anyone saw it coming. Without Franklin at QB, however, Missouri may fall off, but A&M should continue to play well as long as JF stays healthy.

Their schedule coming up is a killer too.  They could lose 4 games yet.

That is true. I think USCe has the inside track to the East title.

I thought these teams would be competitive, but they have exceeded my expectations.

Before I get all giddy about either program, I like to take the long view. Let's see what they are doing after 4 or 5 years in the league. I expect Missouri to return to being Missouri (7-8 wins a year, maybe) & maybe somewhat better at A&M. Missouri has played a soft schedule up to now, including a very depleted Georgia team. Georgia was without their their 2 best running backs, and 3 best receivers. Now, they play some real football teams but without their QB. I expect them to lose at least 2 games for sure. A&M will lose Manziel and maybe Sumlin, which will cause an earthquake of change. It will be interesting to see how things proceed for each program.

A&M certainly came into the league with a bag. They have been a great additition to the SEC. Now that they are out from under Texas shadow I look for them to be a very good SEC program in all sports.

Mizzou is off to a good start this year after not even showing a heartbeat in football last year. I expect them to be a middle of the pack football program with a good year every now and then. However, I think they bring a lot to the table in other sports, especially basketball.

I think if you ask SEC Commissioner Mike Slive and SEC school AD's they are are very happy with the addition of A&M and Mizzou. We all know it is about money and right now the SEC kitty is over flowing in an economy that stinks.

I don't know what other sports A&M might be good at. I have never heard of them excelling in anything off the top of my head. Missouri has a solid basketball tradition.

*** As I was typing this, I checked out their baseball history and it is impressive. Five trips to the CWS & 19 conference championships.
