Title: Is Saban's next step Alabama AD?
Post by: roll tide roll on August 15, 2014, 11:27:38 AM
Pure speculation for the purpose of starting a discussion.

I think it is possible.

It would be great for the University.

I don't think so. He is not a big picture guy. He is hands on and demands to be in charge. It would drive him nuts watching someone else coach his team.

I think he coaches a few more years and heads to his lake house showing up occasionally on ESPN and attending championship team reunions.

I agree.  That is the most probable outcome.

I think he is a big picture guy.  I also think he is a micromanager.  A program like Alabama needs a micromanager.  Previous coaches were unsuccessful b/c they did not pay attention to the small details and understand how those small parts contribute to the whole.

He likes a challenge and running an entire athletic department is one thing he has never done.

It would drive him nuts watching someone else coach his team
I believe that would be difficult for him.

Uh, no. The reason football coaches were made the AD's in the past was to get a pay raise since their pay was so low. That's not the case now. Being AD means listening to everyone's complaints & gripes, attending budget meetings, and kissing the rear of alumni.

I think he coaches a few more years and heads to his lake house showing up occasionally on ESPN and attending championship team reunions, which will be numerous considering that he will have 8 championship teams with whom to re-unite.

What ever he chooses will be Mrs. Terri's decision. I think this is the true route after football. RTR!

I don't see it.

I would love for Bama to get Ozzie Newsome, but I really don't see that either.  Maybe after he retires from his NFL gig...

Don't see it happening. I would love to see Ozzie come home.

I am always fascinated by talk of Ozzie becoming AD at Alabama. He makes like $6 million a year with Baltimore and the AD salary at Bama pays around $500,000, maybe. He has been an executive with the Browns/Ravens since 1991. He sits on top of the world in the NFL, far exceeding any college AD. He ain't coming, period.

I think the reason for the talk is Ozzie himself mentioned how he might one day like to return to a position at Bama, after retirement of course.

I would have to agree with Kirk Herbstreit, that once he retires from Alabama that if he were to make a move to any where besides his house on the lake it would be to the TV set. Either ESPN or the SEC Network.

That's possible, since we hired a 71 year old man as our new AD. Ozzie might retire at say age 62 and then come here. He would be a spring chicken, age-wise. However, he has lived in Baltimore for nearly 20 years, is he going to move & start all over again?

I think Saban only likes to control things on a football field....so he
won't become an AD.... but will become a part-time sports analyst after
retirement from UA coaching job.

I'm ok with whatever decision he makes.  If he becomes the AD then I am sure we will have plenty to be proud of as fans.  If he decides to become an analyst then that would be great too as long as he doesn't do some of the stupid little skits that Lou and Mark May do...

I agree with Phoe.  The AD position just doesn't seem to fit his personality.

Yeah, it ain't happening. Ozzie is set up here, and unless the Ravens tank the season for about, oh, 7-10 seasons, he won't be canned either.

Raven fans are that accustomed to mediocrity?  ???

Uh, no. I'm just speaking of the cache that Ozzie has built up so far. I was partly being facetious anyway.

I'm not going to go so far as to say he wouldn't take the job if it were offered to him. CNS is a person that thrives on being successful at whatever he does as we have all witnessed of him except for the Dolphins job and I think that failure was because he wasn't given total control of the team.

What I've seen in him is something more than being a football coach at Alabama. Dr. Witt, I think, is the reasoning behind this as he has taken the university to a level that no one ever expected, combining academics and sports. I truly believe if Dr. Witt asked CNS to become the AD after his coaching days and challenge him to take the athletic program to a level beyond imagination, he would do it.

There is also another person of interest for the job that has become a "special assistant" to Bill Battle, I wouldn't rule this person out either.
