Gene Stallings will be honored this weekend for a career in college football spanning nearly 40 years. In South Bend, Ind., at the site of the College Football Hall of Fame, he will gather with his fellow inductees today for the start of festivities before slipping on his Hall of Fame blazer Saturday.

At arguably the center of collegiate football, with Touchdown Jesus looking on from the University of Notre Dame, Stallings' lifework will be on display - his championship tenure at the University of Alabama, his years guiding the Texas A&M football program and even his 17 seasons as an assistant coach in the National Football League. In a room full of football men, in a town built on football, there will be talk of championships, of epic wins and heartbreaking losses.

What won't be on display, however, are the moments that have defined the 76-year-old native of Paris, Texas - from his start as a high school player, to his special relationship with a special son, to his retirement to raise cattle on a remote ranch in Texas.

Applause E-Cred...Great read, as CGS dons his CFHoF Jacket for the event.

Great article on Coach. Thanks Coach for being a man anyone can look up to. Thanks for all the memories, and thanks for representing the University of Alabama with class and dignity. ROLL TIDE!

Applause E-Cred

Thanks to #1Tidefan, and thanks to pmull for putting it on the home page.

I wish Johnny had lived long enough to see the 2008-2009 run.  He died just a few weeks before the Clemson game as I recall.

I remember seeing an interview with CGS not long after Johnny died where he talked about Nick Saban being Johnny's favorite coach at Alabama.  CGS said that it didn't matter who the coach was at Alabama, he would always answer that question with the current coach.  CGS would say, "now Johnny you know your old dad was the coach there for a little while".  "No, my favorite Alabama coach is Nick Saban."

I bet you all have to agree with me that when Johnny passed on to Heaven everyone had a tear and saddened heart. CGS IS a great man not only for football but for ther underprivileged children he worked with during his tenure. God Bless caoch and we pray God continues to Bless your family. RTR!

Well deserved honor for CGS, and a great article. I think there also needs to be a special wing of the HOF dedicated solely to those few players at A&M who survived the Bear's Junction camp in '54.

Here is a couple of great videos.  The first one has the favorite coach story at the end.

I've been privileged enough to have met Coach a few times and also heard him speak to larger audiences several times...one thing that's never changed...I always wished I had more time with him.
