Title: POLL: Should we have a Religion Board?
Post by: SUPERCOACH on March 03, 2011, 12:35:56 PM
Some people would like a religion forum, so I thought I would take a poll to see what the consensus is.  However we reserve the right to veto the poll results if we think this is going to stir up too much trouble, or even shut down the board later.

But this is our forum so I wanted to hear your opinions.

Thanks.

IMO - As a pacle to discuss christian topics, prayer requests, etc., Yes.

As a pacle to argue the existence of God or Jesus?  No.

We are a private board and can do whatever we want and I think that almost everyone is Christian, so it could be a Christian discussion area as opposed to an all out religion Armageddon.

how about to have a daily devotional? I think that would be good for me to start my day in discussions. RTR!

Agree. Doubt it would see much traffic.

Don't call it the religion board, either.  That's begging for trolls.  Call it Faith Matters or something like that.  I'm not a fan of the term religio, anyway,  even though I am a conservative southern Baptist.

That's a good idea!  Applause for that one :)

Ditto, again.

It could be respectful of other religions without it turning into a war.  Someone suggested Faith matters.... why not name it after a campus chapel.  I know there are several now, but I recall reading somewhere that a chapel was one of the original campus buildings.  I'm looking for the name, but maybe someone else will know.

I think it might be a good place to have respectful discussions about different dichotomies, points of view, doctrines and the like.  I think that's definitely possible within the confines of a respectful forum.

I was thinking about the building too.  I was hoping someone would know of a building on campus that we could name it after.  When I lived behind the Bryant Museum there was some sort of building between my apartment and the quad where a lot of the Christian groups met.  It was not an original building though.  If there was an original campus building that was a chapel that would be a great name.

I don't think there is any chapel on campus I am aware of, unless one of the older buildings used to be used for that purpose. The closest thing I could find was Canterbury Chapel, which I believe is the Episcopal student center (and I think it is on Hackberry not to far from the Bryant museum). If there are no other options, I would say go with that. By the way, I really like this idea, although I do think that we should allow discussions of other beliefs AS LONG AS IT IS DONE IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER. If it gets out of hand, offending poster should get the banhammer. I am a Christian myself and certainly believe that Christ is THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life, but I am not opposed to rationally discussing my views and the views of others. This is how we learn and, hopefully, plant a seed in someone who does not believe.

It's kind of nice having a variety of threads in this forum...just like it is. :)  Of, course when more people sign up and threads increase...maybe splitting them up would be the best thing.  Whatever you decide.

I like Canterbury Chapel, that is a pretty cool name.  I don't remember that being there back then, but I 'm talking about 20 years ago.  In fact the apartment I was living in then doesn't even exist any more, it was torn down a long time ago.  Which is good because that place was a dump.

I just checked Google satellite and it looks like there are several different faith based student centers in that block now.  I think I remember the baptist one from way back then, but that wasn't the one I was posting about.  I can identify the building on the satellite photo, but it doesn't say what it is.  But Canterbury Chapel is a great name, so I don't guess it matters.  I especially like having a non-denominational name for the forum, even though the real life building is Canterbury Episcopal Chapel Student Center.

So I guess Canterbury Chapel is the leading candidate right now for the name.

OK, I just switched to street view and looked around at the buildings.  The building I was remembering is the Catholic Student Center, just in case you were wondering.

Well, there was overwhelming support for this one.  And we have already had a few posts that will get it off to a good start.  I will go ahead and create Canterbury Chapel and move some topics over there.
