Title: A Very Hot Day at Bryant Denny
Post by: Jamos on August 22, 2015, 05:51:57 PM
To say it was hot is an understatement, I would guess the temp was in the 110-120 degree range on the field. I have to compliment the players for how they handled it as I didn't see any cramped players during the practice. There were a couple that were helped off the field bit I don't think cramps were their problem.

The scrimmage pretty much looked like the last scrimmage of the preseason for the players. I think CNS said the players have had one day off in the last 14 days so the players were pretty much drained from a physical standpoint.

Coach Saban opened his coverage of the practice with us emphasizing how he has challenged the players in respect as to what will they be remembered for when their playing days are over at Alabama. He stated that he told the players that each of them has a right to fail themselves but they have no right cause those around them to fail and in other words it is gut check time. It is time to step up and be that player that they have dreamed about being since they were a little boy.

Who will be the next QB is the question that everyone is asking and Coach said even Miss Terrie would ask him that when he got home. There is no first string QB right now but Coach was emphatic when he stated that the player that earned that would be the player that would not beat the team with mistakes. I think we all are well aware of that by now if you know anything about Bama football. As I watched the scrimmage I finally started to form an opinion of who I think the first two QBs are and who will be the starter.

If I had to point a finger at the one area that concerned me most about the team it would be the number of dropped passes. Again it was hot as blazes out there and fatigue could have been the big reason for a lot of them. There were also a lot of bad throws by the QBs as well. The starting defense and offense had some good moments though as the starters would flex there muscles occasionally.

Are we ready for Wisconson? No, but this team will get some needed rest and will be ready. It was good to see Kenyon Drake racing around the field as well as Bo Scarbrough and somehow I get the feeling that our running game coulds be something very special this year. The youngsters behind those team looked good as well when they had their chance to show up. The one player that caught my eye though was #16 Richard Mullaney, the transfer wide receiver from Oregon State. He made some good catches and ran really well after the catches. There were other players that had their good moments, Derrick Henry, Chris Black (finally got rid of the black jersey), ArDarius  Stewart ( made a super one handed grab on a tipped ball inthe end zone, and Kenyon Drake with aqll of these being on the offense. There were many good plays on the defensive side of the ball but the one player that caught my eye was#15 Ronnie Harrison. This young man seems to have a bright future in front of him.

There is two weeks of healing for the players now and it is much needed. I think this team will be more than ready for Wisconsin and by the way, my prediction for the starting QB is #11 Alec Morris and #18 Cooper Bateman with Morris getting the nod. Remember, this is just my prediction and not what CNS said. ;)

And on a side note, Bill Battle introduced Bama basketball coach Anthony Johnson to the REC that drew a rousing ovation. I think there has been a bonding friendship developed between CNS and the football team and CAJ and the basketball team. CAJ is no dummy. :D

Get your tailgate parties planned because Bama football is just two weeks away. RTR!!!!

#+ to you JAMOS. Thanks for a great report and I also from watching what I could on AL.com, I liked Alec Morris. I didn't hear you report on the freshman Blake Barnett, I wonder if he just showed some consistency at all? Well done my brother! RTR!

Ricky, back in the Spring when I attended the practice before ADay  I commented that there was very little difference in the performance of the 4 QBS and CNS could do a coin flip for his starter. I stand by that statement today in that there is not that much difference between the QBS and any of the four could play. AS CNS stated today, the QB that makes the best decisions and makes the fewest mistakes will be the starter. This is the first time I can ever remember Bama having 4 QBs that could play the position with very little drop off from one to the next. Now my statement is based only on practice time and their time on the field in game action will reveal who ends up the better of the 4, Blake could be the man.

Excellent summary, Jamos.

How were the linebackers?  Who's calling the plays on defense?

Excellent summary, Jamos.

The linebackers looked ok, there were some big hits out there including Ruben. It was hard to tell with all of the substituting going on but Ragland seemed to be the most active in adjusting the players. I will say though, the offensive line blocked extremely good at times, breaking the running backs for some nice gains. At the start of the scrimmage, Derrick Henry was running over everybody. He didn't stay in very long though. I thought Drake and Scarbrough looked pretty healthy during warmups. Damien Harris got welcomed to the SEC late in the scrimmage as one of the linebackers, I think Ragland, really drilled him but he took it good. The mass substitutions made it hard to tell who was in there and who weren't. We were sitting in the upper deck with no binos so it was hard to tell what some of their numbers were. I didn't think Scott punted as well as he did last year either, probably just a bad day. The most disappointing thing to me was the number of passes dropped, this really concerns me. Our ball handling still isn't where it should be either but that is a mental thing and that can be corrected hopefully. That problem really hurt us last year. Anyway, I didn't see anything that can't be corrected and I think with a few days rest they will perform much better.

I'm a little late to the party, but thanks for a great report, J. How did the defensive line look as far as pass rush goes, or were they allowed to rush the QB?

Fox News reporting Morris will start at QB.

That's also the speculation from what I'm reading in other places. Coker has a strong arm, but is slow to read defenses and slow to get the ball out. Cornwell is rumored to be in the CNS dog house. Bateman has been inconsistent, at best, and Barnett needs to learn the system a little better, although he's the best athlete of all the QBs.

Word coming out of camp is that even though Morris doesn't have the strongest of arms, and can be off target like the others, he reads defenses extremely well, and is exactly the type of game manager that Saban likes.

Why is Cornwell in the doghouse?  What did he do or not do?

I didn't hear any gossip or discussion about Cornwell yesterday and I was around a lot of people but this isn't to say that there isn't an issue between him and CNS. :dunno:

I read he spouted out to Kiffin about not getting as many reps as some of the others. That did not sit well with Kiffin or CNS.

I keep hearing that Morris lacks the natural talent of some of the others but he makes up for it with his football IQ.

I borrowed this off another site, maybe it will shed a little light on the subject.

Quote
Apparently rumor has it that Cornwell did something embarrassing over the Summer that placed him in the discipline bin. His penalty is some sort of game(s) suspension, so he would not be eligible for at least the first game of the season. Hence, limited playing time in practice. Do not think it was football related

That's not enough to be starting QB at Bama. i mean look at McElroy and Jay Barker, what did they ever achieve?

Yes they were allowed to rush the qb but tag only. The pressure was good but again the heat had them playing on a gas tank that was on empty. I thought the D did pretty good on 3rd and short in stopping the run. The D has a lot of players this year compared to past years. The qbs didn't look very good when flushed out of the pocket because of dropped passes and bad passes. Bateman looked the best when flushed out of the pocket, he has decent quickness and knew where the sideline was.

I can now see why Barnett is faster than all the other QBs. I could probably pick up a step or 2 also, if Jarren Reed was after me.

I think Rashaan Evans is the key for the defense and Ryan Kelly for the offense but when you look at the first two units as a group, there are many leaders on the field. Right now we don't know who the starting QB is but I think Alec Morris shows a lot of leadership potential when he is in there. I think as the season starts and a few games have been played, we will be able to single out those new ones that are taking on a leadership role.
