First, I heard on Finebaum that DE Greg Hardy could be let go by the Panthers because of his domestic violence situation. Plus this on Adrian Petersen:

Quote
Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted by a Montgomery County, Texas, grand jury on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child, multiple media reports are reporting.

More info about NFL. A report about players & ex-players about dementia.

Quote
Nearly three in 10 former NFL players will develop at least moderate neurocognitive problems and qualify for payments under the proposed $765 million concussion settlement, according to data prepared for ex-players' lawyers and made public Friday.

More bad news for Goodell.

Quote
More than half of Americans surveyed say NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was not being truthful when he said no one in the league office, prior to its release Monday, saw the video of Ray Rice punching and knocking unconscious his then-fiancee inside a casino elevator.

What do you think about all this stuff guys? I am interested in those of you who have kids playing football, want to play football, or who played football through high school and maybe into college. Also, what about these brain problems associated with football, what's going to happen to the sport and how many more changes can they make? Just wondering.

Forgot about this knucklehead and his domestic violence problems.

Quote
A court hearing for Ray McDonald, originally scheduled for Monday, has been postponed as San Jose police continue their investigation into the San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman's Aug. 31 arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, according to the Santa Clara district attorney's office.

My son begs me to play, but so far I have not let him.  I may let him when he gets in high school, but I am concerned that all the kids that are playing now will be way ahead of him.  It is a dilemma that I have thought about quite a bit.  Right now I am leaning toward getting him involved in a 7 on 7 or flag football league so he can learn the basics of the game without fear of serious injury.  But there aren't any such leagues around here because all the kids are playing tackle football.

MD, it seems like the NFL is trying to "FINALLY" stop sweeping this kind of behavior under the rug. They have got to have random drug(steroid) tests every month even in the off season. I am sure most of us have experienced someone who has taken  steroids, or something similar and seen the change in their personality and especially their aggressiveness.
Next they need to address concussions and not accept that the helmet design can't be IMPROVED. Why can't they put some sort of cushioning substance on all players helmets? Offense and defense, to absorb the hits

BINGO!! I think you have nailed it. The owners don't want to lose valuable players and mess with them making profits from winning and making the playoffs. The dirt has piled so high now they can't sweep it under the rug anymore. Good observation 57.

I agree that helmets can be improved.  Scientists/engineers need to get involved to create a helmet that can minimize the impact forces on the brain.  Look how far we have progressed in automobile safety since the invention of crash test dummies.  They need to have a similar effort to make football safer, without throwing the game away and resorting to flag football.

I'm OK with broken bones occasionally, as long as it is rare.  Those types of injuries can generally be recovered from at least enough to go on and live a productive life.  Even Prothro's gruesome injury will not prevent him from leading a normal life.  Sure, he can't play sports professionally, but he can still work and lead a normal life like the rest of us.  I wouldn't wish his injury on anybody, I'm just making the point that even with that injury he is still alive and a productive member of society, unlike some of the guys who suffered head and neck injuries.

But head and neck injuries need to be dealt with scientifically and eliminated as much as possible.  Neck injuries/paralysis are pretty much a function of improper technique by the person who is ultimately the victim.  Education is the answer there, and if they insist on not using proper technique the outcome is on them.  Of course there will be exceptions to this and occasionally someone will use proper technique and still get a serious neck injury.  For example, if they are in the process of falling and can't control how contact is made.

I think the college game has it right on the targeting rule, now.  If it is questionable go ahead and throw the flag, but if the video review shows that it was a clean hit then reverse the penalty.  I think that over time this new rule will make a big difference without really eliminating the big "clean" hits.

Today on Mike and Mike in the morning, I heard some women were saying this is not a football/NFL decision, it is a police matter.  Here is an argument.  If a CEO beats his wife he is not removed from his job, why should the NFL be any different?

That thought has crossed my mind as well.  But these days, the CEO would lose his job if the public found out about and it hurt the company.  The CEO of a fast food chain for example.  The CEO of an obscure company that made tools would probably keep his job.

This discussion sort of ties in to the way the NCAA handled the Penn State case.  Was it the NCAA's place to punish Penn State for a criminal act?  We've had that debate on here before too.

I was raised where you NEVER, EVER, struck a woman! PERIOD!
Maybe it was the circumstances they were raised under that they thought this was OK. Still not OK with the rest of us!
