Title: Game notes: Bama vs LSU
Post by: hscoach on November 06, 2016, 12:20:43 PM
LSU vs Bama

First congrats to the Bama players and coaches on the big win vs LSU on Saturday.     This was what is known as grown man football.  LSU is a quality team and they played a heck of a game.  In this game both teams had 5 first downs in the first half.  In the second half Bama had 11 first downs while LSU only had 1.

OFFFENSE:  The Bama offense put together 323 yards of total offense against a very good defensive team who also had a good game plan coming in.  Bama had 107 yards passing and 216 rushing.  As far as negative plays, there were 12 tackles for losses, 1 sack, 1 fumble and an interception.  I credited Bama with 5 three and outs as well as a two and out because of the lost fumble.  On the positive side, Bama had 7 runs of 10+ yards and 3 passes of 10+ yards.  Bama only got into the red zone a couple of times.  Here they turned the ball over on downs and kicked a field goal.  The touchdown came from outside the red zone.  They also missed a field goal outside the red zone.  One important fact that may have hindered Bama, especially in the first half, was the horrible field position they had to start with.  I do think Bama could have adjusted the game plan a little earlier with the way LSU was attacking from the edge.

QB:  Hurts, in my opinion, played a pretty good game.  He did have a couple of mistakes which were the fumble and the interception.  I think on the interception, he expected the receiver to keep running however it looked like the receiver may have settled to avoid running into coverage.  He threw some of his better balls today.  The deep ball he threw was right on the mark which is a pass he has been missing.

RB:  They ran hard against a tough defense.  They were hit hard and when call upon to block they did a very good job.  One key block by Scarbrough allowed Hurts to make a big run on the edge.  Scarbrough seems to be getting better by the game.

Rec:  There were a few bobbles here.  I’m not sure they would have been able to make much off some of these plays but it seemed they were in such a hurry to make the play they didn’t make the catch.

OL:   The was a hard fought game in the trenches.  They did enough to help win the game.  This is a game where there was going to be wins and losses for each side.  I did think Robinson did a pretty good job and each one had highlight plays during the night.

Defense:  The defense played outstanding.  Bama’s defense gave up a total of 125 yards, which included 92 passing yards as well as 33 rushing yards.  As far as negative plays, I have Bama with 5 sacks, 4 tackles for losses, an interception and a field goal block.  LSU had no runs over 10 yards and only 3 pass plays that went for 19+ yards.  Bama is credited with 7 three and outs and 1 two and out because of the fumble.  LSU never got into the red zone in the game and only attempted one field goal which was blocked.  As I said above LSU had only 1 first down in the second half and if I heard correctly LSU had a total of 25 yards in the second half.  This was aided by Bama controlling the football most of the 2nd half.  One thing very important was there were few missed tackles.

DL:    They all played well.  Because of the huddling of the offense they were able to rotate players in and out.  Whoever they put in did their job well.

LB:  As usual they did a played a good game.  They may have missed coverage on the tight end delay but they were always in positon to make plays.

DB:  They were not challenged very often. The one big play they had the corner overran the play and allowed the receiver to pull up and catch an underthrown ball.  This one play was 41 yards of their total offense.  I also think Brown did a pretty good job for his start and Harrison is doing a better job in coverage.

Special Teams:    Another missed makeable field goal. This really needs to be cleaned up.   There was fumble on one punt that was recovered by Diggs.  Most of the special teams were okay and no huge problems.

Penalties:   Bama had 6 penalties for 29 yards.  The one that probably hurt the most was the false start by Pierschbacher.  However, I will say that I didn’t see it even on the replay.  I also wonder about one false start from Robinson.  He seemed to act like the LSU player did something to cause this.

Finally:  Bama has some big games left.  MSU had a huge win which should give them some confidence.  Hopefully Bama won’t read their press clippings as they say and continue to improve.

Thanks hscoach. Very good job of picking it apart. My one question is the QB and completing passes down field to back the DB's back some? Also my other question is how in the world do we stop these needless Motion Penalties? As you said I didn't see Piersch move either but the ref did i guess but how do we clean this up? RTR!

It is all about focus.  Now I will say the environment they played in last night you might even expect more than they had.

Coach, as always thanks for your great insight.

Question:  In some other threads, there is discussion that LSU either was stealing (or decoding) the signals CLK was sending into to Hurts, or that our O is so predictable that LSU kinda knew what was coming.  They seemed to shift around after the Bama play was signaled in.  Did you notice this?  And what do you think?

I honestly think it was just great game planning.  If you think about it Bama does the same thing with no huddle teams.

One think I left off the notes.  For LB play I think it was a huge play when Hamilton made a shoes string tackle on LF.  It looked like he was going to be able to get into the secondary for a big run.  This didn't allow LSU to flip the field in the second half.

1. Agree totally, Scarbrough played his best game. Has he been slowed by injury or was this his type of game, the need for a big, bruising RB?

2. Cam Robinson looked solid & I don't think he had a penalty.

3. How do you "fix" the FG kicking? Take him behind the stadium and beat the snot out of him, get a player from the soccer team to try out, or actually recruit a couple of kickers next year?

Cam had one false start which it looked like he thought it was going to be on LSU.    As far as the kicking a lot of the time it looks like an alignment problem.

Thanks bunches, coach.  Excellent assessment.

QUESTION:  You said, "I think on the interception, he expected the receiver to keep running however it looked like the receiver may have settled to avoid running into coverage."

Actually, if you watch the play it appears Ridley's pattern was cut off, then the DB put out his arms around Ridley and corralled him (close to holding, if not).  In the videos you can see the DB holding Ridley as the ball goes past.

It's here (0:23 seconds into the video).

That's not a very good video above, and I couldn't find a YouTube of it.  The TV broadcast showed it well.

Here's the video I found.  The play starts at 0:23.

How do you "fix" the FG kicking? Take him behind the stadium and beat the snot out of him, get a player from the soccer team to try out, or actually recruit a couple of kickers next year?

Aren't there any more Tiffins around?  Van kicked 135 of 135 PAT's and holds Bama's longest field goal and killed Auburn in the 1985 Iron Bowl.  His son, Leigh, kicked even more PAT's

Eddie Pinata, or whatever his name was that was 100% committed to Bama. ended up at Florida. Griff would be riding the pine if EP had been 101% committed.

 :yawn:A few extra notes:
First:  ED O wants to talk about penalties, here are a few that were not called.  1,  Holding on the receiver on the interception.  2,  Holding on the LG.  3.  Hands to the face mask by the DL.  4.  Holding on the defense on the punt.  5.  Offensive pass interference on Averett.   6.  Face mask on the TE during the scrum on LSU's sideline.  Also, #93 on the sideline could have been called for unsportsman like conduct.  7.  Holding on Allen on a pass play.

Second:  Bama missed 2 crucial blocks, one on the first play of the game by the receiver and the second on the screen by Robinson.  There were others.

Third:  LF touched the ball 18 times in the game and there were only 3 solo tackles on him.  That means Bama was flying to the ball.

Four:  LSU had only given up 2 runs of over 20 yards prior to this game.  Bama had 3.

Five:  The announcers keep saying how this defensive team is built to stop spread teams.  Well this was a team built for power running the football and Bama stopped them pretty well.

A few extra notes:
First:  ED O wants to talk about penalties, here are a few that went called.

True Coach. The corndogs obviously didn't want to acknowledge those. I didn't catch all of those, but enough to know that things were sliding on both sides.

Excellent, coach.

BTW, did you see the block by Robinson on the 4th-down play late in the game??  Worthy of a look.  Cam Robinson drove his man 10 yards down the field and out of bounds.

Was that on Bo's run?

Was that on Bo's run?

Yes, it was the first play of the fourth quarter.  It's on the video halfway down the page of this link: http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2016/11/why_cole_cubelic_was_impressed.html

Quote
Alabama was facing a fourth-and-1 at the LSU 33-yard line with the game still scoreless.  It was the drive that ended with Jalen Hurts' go-ahead touchdown run.

So this was a big moment, and running back Bo Scarbrough picked up the first down with a 10-yard run to the left.

He was aided by Robinson, who was one of two blockers leading the way. After engaging with an LSU defensive back around the line of scrimmage, Robinson pushed that defensive back around 15 yards downfield. Robinson eventually shoved him out of bounds as Scarbrough ran behind him.

Good stuff!
