Title: Tide defense bounces back
Post by: pmull on April 10, 2011, 07:21:29 AM
TUSCALOOSA – Dont’a Hightower made 10 tackles. Courtney Upshaw and C.J. Mosley added seven each.

Alabama’s defense, by most accounts outplayed in their initial scrimmage last week, bounced back on Saturday. In the final scrimmage before next Saturday’s A-Day game, the defense, which returns nine starters, did a better job of tackling, pressuring the quarterbacks and limiting explosive plays. Each of those areas was criticized by Tide coach Nick Saban last week.

“We didn’t have quite as many big plays today, which is probably a good thing, but we still had a few -- and that’s still a few too many for the defense,” Saban said after the two and a half hour scrimmage, which was closed to media.

The ongoing quarterback battle between AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims continues to be tight. McCarron had a better day statistically, but Saban warned about reading too much into his four touchdown passes.

“We do so many situations between goal line, red zone,” the coach said. “A guy might throw four touchdown passes but if you put the ball on the 18-yard line he can throw two of them then, which means he’s throwing well, but doesn’t necessarily mean they were big plays or whatever.”

The part about the young guys getting tired and loosing it a little bit, it seems they have not been in the 4th Qtr program long enough. Maybe over summer will help them if they are willing to put in the time to get right. RTR!
