‘The report of my death was an exaggeration’

                                                          Mark Twain

I have visited the LSU boards and read their in-game thread for last night's game. There was understandable disappointment, and a pile of the truly pathetic carping about the officiating. What was most puzzling though were the apocalyptic comments about this being the end of LSU football greatness. I really think that they sold their team short with this reaction. These SEC games are like heavy weight prize fights. A couple of successful blows lead to a sort of cascade of events that can make a contest between two pretty closely matched teams look like a one sided affair in the end. But I think we'd all agree that if LSU had scored on the two early turn-over drives, it could possibly have started a cascade events that favored the Tigers. Might we have battled back to win 38-31? I doubt it. If you were like me, and are honest with yourself, you were plenty worried about this game into the third quarter. They made tremendously impressive big gainers in the first half, and converted several clutch 3rd downs. They have decent team speed and big, talented wide receivers. Are we the better team this year? I think we clearly are. Is their defense a little down? Sure. But, that's certainly no reason for them to think that they wheels are going to fall off of their program. What Alabama is doing, the success we are having, is really an abberation. If a team starts looking at 9-3 years as the beginning of the end, there is gonna be a lot of unnecessary gloom and doom out there.

Side note, all the LSU folks I ran into were reasonably decent folks and it was nice to have them visit.

I think that is mostly frustration speaking and I know we will hear the same thing when Bama finally loses. Some people think that their favorite team is never supposed to lose and most of these people that talk the loudest are on their second twelve pack of beer or their second bottle of whiskey.

BINGO!! Alabama fans are capable of many stupid things, in words & in actions (Updyke). Fans are basically the same at every team, really good, practical ones or really stupid & obnoxious.

They should have figured out it was a down year before they played Bama.  They already lost to Georgia and Ole Miss.  Their Defense is young, they lost a lot to the NFL....   Maybe they are just figuring out how dominant Bama has become.

This was their third loss of the year and they've still got Texas A&M.  They haven't had a lot 3-4 loss seasons recently.  If I was an LSU fan what would concern me is not so much that they lost, but that they were physically dominated.  Over the last five seasons LSU has been the one team that physically go toe-to-toe with Bama.  If they lose that physicality they'll fall into the middle tier of the SEC.

You nailed it perfectly. They just lost too much talent at one time off their defense and they could not recuperate. I expect much more from them next year.

Actually, my thought was that Les looked a lot like Urban after the last beating Saban put on him.  He literally looked a bit lost at the end of that game.  The Who's may be right. This very well could be the beginning of the end if Saban is in the Mad Hatter's head.

It wasn't just their third loss of the year, it was their third loss in a row to Alabama/Nick Saban.  They're finally seeing a gap forming.

@BamaFaninACCLand - Les looked lost?  How could you tell?

Last year we lost J Williams, Q Dial, N Johnson, R Lester, D Millner and D Square. The year before we lost M Barron, J Chapman, N Gentry, J Harris, D Hightower, P Jones, D Kirkpatrick, D Menzie, C Upshaw and A Watkins.

I think we lose a lot every year. Injuries hurt us in 2010 more than who we lost from 2009 IMO.

2010 was all about a lack of quality leadership and desire to win.

A gap widening.   This was LSU's second 21 point loss in three games.  Les is stumped, he's without an answer, and fans can see that.

Have to disagree. We lost TEN starters from the defense after 2009, that was a disaster.

LSU is one of the few teams that match up very well with Bama, but their problem is depth. While the starters are very good the are still very young on defense. We were fortunate to be ahead at the end of the first half, if they do not turn the ball over it may have been very different. But on the other hand AJ seemed a little too pumped up and overthrew two wide open receivers that very well could have resulted in scores. Not to mention that he did not see an uncovered TJ Yeldon split out to the left with no one anywhere close to him. But when the offensive line came out and took over in the second half you could see the writing on the wall. Their linebackers and D-Linemen were totally gassed. The constant steady pounding finally took it's toll in the 4th quarter and it was game over. Overall it was a great game in one of the best atmosphere's in Bryant Denny in a while. Now it's time to go quite some cow bells and put the Bulldogs back in their kennels!!!! Roll Tide!!!

Good assessment, PeeWee. I've heard and read where this Bama team is not as talented as our other NC teams. I disagree, with the exception of the 2011 team. I think that team may have been one of the all time great defensive teams.

This team has grown leaps and bounds since the CSU game. I think the offense, right now, is the best Bama's ever had. The "D" is great in every phase, other than the D-backs, but they showed against LSU that they can adjust and be very good. When you have the talent at every position, like Bama does, that depth just shines in the 4th quarter.
