Black participated in the second scrimmage last Saturday -- he said he had three or four catches -- and feels good headed into the last few practices before the season opener on Sept. 5 against Wisconsin. Black is one of the only receivers on the roster that played any meaningful time for the Tide last year. He's the top returning receiver after catching 15 passes for 188 yards last season.

His experience makes him the presumed starter at the slot receiver position but Black faces stiff competition from graduate transfer Richard Mullaney. The Oregon State transfer has drawn strong reviews from Alabama coach Nick Saban and has been billed as a sure-handed, savvy receiver. At the least, Mullaney could cut into Black's playing time and targets.

This poor guy just can not stay healthy. He's one of those guys who is shadowed by bad luck.

He was very impressive last Saturday, I thought he did the best job of the receivers last Saturday.

That's good to hear. He was as highly touted as a recruit as Coop was. I hope he does well this year.

He made the secondary look pretty bad on 3 or 4 plays, he was open big time and made some long runs after catching it.

He was well ahead of Coop as a true fresh before injury. Very different players and Coop had/has more upside. But, Black is a special talent if he stays healthy and develops a good relationship with the QBs to serve as a reliable WR.

Unfortunately for him, he'll have Mullaney and Drake taking snaps away from him in the slot.

Good to see you back over here, Che.

You're right, but from a fan's perspective, that's a good problem to have.
