Rain returns today.

Diamond news:  Baseball team lost; softball team won.

Gray Fox that was wandering blindly in our neighborhood yesterday.  Beautiful, but clearly very sick.  Shortly after I took this photo a policeman shot it.  Not sure if it was distemper or parvo, but unfortunate.

Very nice, Chech!   Do any of you folks have some veggies planted?

My spot I used to stop and buy good tomatoes doesn't look like it's going to be in business this year.   They normally sell plants in the spring, but would also have some "hot house" tomatoes by now.  It's still vacant this year.

Hi Ricky.  Hope your trip to the VA went well.

We used to have a veggie garden, but now that I spend summers out west we've stopped planting anything but flowers.  But our colleague Red Elephant planted veggies this year.  He lives near Tuscaloosa, and had strong opinions about availability of tomato plants this year.  Prices are up.  Maybe he'll jump in and explain.

BTW, the rule of thumb here in Oxford, MS is "don't plant tomatoes until after April 20th".  I heard that from a botanist back in the 1990s, and he's been right.  We often have frost right up to April 20th.  We're 50 miles south of Memphis; cooler climate that Tuscaloosa, and the coastal cities.

I saw recently that April 20th is the average date of the last frost in Huntsville, which struck me as later than expected at the time.  Normally we plant them a little earlier and just make sure to give them a little protection if a frost is expected.

I wish I had some sweet corn in the ground too.  It's hard to beat some fresh corn.  I'm also a lover of okra, but being an African plant, okra loves the heat so it's a late planter along with some purple hull peas.

When I was a lad, my grandparents (well, they'd passed at the time), but their land had a nice fruit orchard on it.  About 30 peach trees, 6 apples, some plums, cherries and a stand of grapes too.  Boy, that homemade peach ice cream was good stuff.

@ Ricky:  Pray

@ HL:  It's not just the frost near April 20th, it's the cold ground.  Tomatoes planted a week or two later grow fast enough to catch up with those planted earlier.  Yum, that corn sounds good.  But the raccoons here own the night, and they'd steal every ear.  I like the sound of that orchard and ice cream!

I'd love to have me a homemade meal of fresh Silver Queen corn, fried Okra, some peas, cornbread and a big ole jug of sweet tea to wash it all down then follow that up with some good homemade ice cream.  Peach or grape would suite me just fine...  Cool

You're making me hungry! Don't forget the nap after the ice cream.

The last few years I've only grown raised bed tomatoes.  Celebrity tomatoes are a hybrid that seem to do best with the blight we get every year + they taste great.  The price for plants is through the roof at the Co-op and box stores.  Browns nursery has the best prices @ $0.20/plant.  Fried green tomatoes and BLTs!!!
