46  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Herbstreit on Tide in 2022 on: August 26, 2022, 06:36:12 PM

Quote
Kirk Herbstreit released his annual “Herbie Awards” as we get geared up for the college football season, adding the Alabama Crimson Tide is “going to be possessed.”

The ESPN “College GameDay” analyst explained just how motivated Nick Saban’s team this year will be, while also awarding Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr. with the “Ultimate Herbie,” which goes to Herbstreit’s best college football player - on and off the field - for the upcoming year.

Good article. I can only hope that Alabama stays healthy this year, especially Young, Anderson, Turner and the other players, too.

48  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: UPDATE ON RECEIVERS - Injuries and Likely Starters on: August 26, 2022, 06:22:57 PM
Really need a couple of receivers to step up big time. I'm looking at JaCorey Brooks, 6'2", to blossom and Burton & Harrell to shine catching the ball. If Holden can make a difference lookout, at 6'3" 214 lbs he might be another Julio. Can't wait to see the team play.

49  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Latu injured on: August 15, 2022, 10:31:16 AM
It's gonna alright. CNS has a way to fix things and how about Robbie? I think he can be a regular TE. RTR!

We signed 3 TE's, one is a 4 star, so I think we're okay.

The play of the Tide players on the European Tour was impressive. We needed some big men and we may have them now. At 6'10" Clowney could be the real deal, Miller is 6'9", plus Bediako at 7 feet has a year of playing and development under his belt now. I am very interested to see what kind of point guard Sears is, another major area of concern last year. If Quinerly returns healthy it would be an overall major upgrade in the point guard position. Hope all this potential comes out in the season.

SC, you are so kind. If there is anything we can do to help, financially or otherwise, please let us know. Our numbers are down but the few of us still around enjoy this site very much.

Great news! Will there be anything different we have to do to access the site, like a new password, new anything. I'm a computer idiot so I'm not sure what to expect.

53  Around Campus / The Quad / Alabama Non-Conference BB Schedule on: August 06, 2022, 09:31:54 PM
What a great looking schedule/challenge for Tide basketball and its many new players. Hows this for a chance for the team to shine:

Michigan State
Gonzaga
Houston
Memphis
UCONN (maybe)
Oklahoma
Oregon (maybe)

Plus, we still have to play UK, UT, Auburn & all the other SEC teams. Now, let's see some TEAM play this year on offense and DEFENSE and limit the wild 3 pointers we took last year.

This has been an excellent site but I would not want to impose on SUPERCOACH if it's too much work/cost on him. I would be happy to help with a donation but I think the time involved is the bigger problem. I have said many times on this site that I am a computer idiot so I can not help with the site. This is totally up to our computer guru, SUPERCOACH. If the site ends I will miss it and all the posters we have chatted with over the years.

Who knows what the true story is?   It looks like some online media guys may have created a non-story.  He's never been listed on their team roster because it was never planned that he enroll until June.

But he also seems unstable and unpredictable, so he may have already decided to leave TX or has done something so that TX decided he needed to leave.  He did change some of his own social media logos.

BINGO!! Anything possible with this kid.

56  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Alabama Basketball 2022/2023 Season on: May 13, 2022, 04:00:53 PM
I agree MD. I played BB and it was driven in us to defend first and then rest will come. If we didn't play defense ourselves was on the bench. RTR!

I like that philosophy.

No, I don't think marijuana use is a particularly wise decision, but human beings do many things that are unhealthy or unwise that don't carry the same social or legal stigma.   You don't think the medical evidence of alcohol abuse is just as bad or worse?  My point was more that I get tired of the hypocrisy of it all.  Especially when grown men who indulge in many questionable habits (and that doesn't just include substance abuse) want to run down a 21 year old because he screws up, when they would never care if he didn't play sports at their beloved school.  I judge character more by how you treat your fellow man rather than if you decide to take a puff now and again.  And certainly, being judgmental pricks never helps anyone.

Since you''re so strong against hypocrisy, how about the liberals and media that went on a crusade against cigarettes but give alcohol & marijuana a free ride? Alcohol abuse and deaths (not just DUI) are atrocious along with 9 million alcoholics. I hate smoking since it killed my father. He "enjoyed" smoking but he's still dead (age 69). Now we add marijuana use to alcohol and smoking to cause more problems for society. A 21 year old is an adult and he has to follow the law, like the rest of us. Not aiming anything at you, but the facts about marijuana just aren't found in the media. Don't hold your breath about a media crusade against it.

More positive news about marijuana use.

Quote
What are the short-term effects of marijuana on the brain?
Recent marijuana use (defined as within 24 hours) in youth and adults has an immediate impact on thinking, attention, memory, coordination, movement, and time perception.1

More upbeat news.

Quote
What are the long-term effects of marijuana on the brain?
Marijuana affects brain development. Developing brains, such as those in babies, children, and teenagers, are especially susceptible to the harmful effects of marijuana and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).1,2 Although scientists are still learning about the effects of marijuana on developing brains, studies suggest that marijuana use by mothers during pregnancy could be linked to problems with attention, memory, problem-solving skills, and behavior in their children.3-9

I kinda find the jock sniffer/wanna be internet star making the video more annoying than the arrest.

Are we really still pissed about kids smoking a little weed?  I know it's dumb because it's against NCAA and thus team rules.  So you're jeopardizing your eligibility and all that.  But let's not pretend that weed is cocaine or heroine, or that he did anything violent.  It sounds like he pulled over and fully cooperated.

Goodness, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the amount of adults I know with security clearances holding down very nice jobs that might go home and smoke a little.  And teachers too when I was teaching high school.  I don't do it myself (though I've certainly tried it more than once), but the consequences are so overblown.  In the end, it's less dangerous than alcohol.

Tell him to stop speeding while holding and get some freaking insurance.

No problem with marijuana use, right?

Quote
Substantial evidence from animal research and a growing number of studies in humans indicate that marijuana exposure during development can cause long-term or possibly permanent adverse changes in the brain.

Marshall, what do you think about our two main assistant coaches? They've both been there for many years through several head coaches...are they getting the job done?

I know basketball staffs are so much smaller than football, so (it's a hard comparison) the head coach is more intimately involved in Xs and Os and practice drills, but we've been complaining about fundamentals for years (poor ball handling, free throw shooting, etc).  To me those type things fall on the assistant coaches heavily.

That's a great question & something I have wondered about. Antoine Pettway is the only long time assistant coach we have, that I know of. He is supposed to be an excellent recruiter and he was a point guard at Bama. You would think he knows something about ball handling and running the offense, but can he teach those things, I just don't know. I think we should remember that poor ball handling/turnovers have been a part of our game for several years. Does that point to Pettway, I just don't know but it is a disturbing thought and fact since he has been here for those same years. Coach Oats has to look at these things in a hard way and make changes if needed. Of course, this does not absolve the other assistant coaches or even Coach Oats. This coming season will be fascinating in several ways.
