Title: Another Injury! A QB This Time
Post by: Marshal Dillon on August 17, 2015, 09:13:59 PM
What is going on. Jamos or 2Stater are they using the players as tackling dummies at practice?

Alabama coach Nick Saban was frustrated with his quarterback situation following last Saturday’s scrimmage and that frustration likely was exacerbated today with the announcement that potential starting quarterback frontrunner Jacob Coker would miss time with a foot injury.

Now they're talking about surgery. What the heck?

Quote
Jake Coker, who is battling for the starting quarterback job at Alabama, will be out "several days" after surgery on his injured foot, AL.com reported Monday.

The speculation is that he either had his plant foot stepped on during the scrimmage, or he has an ingrown toenail. Either way, this does not bode well for Coker. He apparently was 4-20 during the scrimmage with multiple interceptions, and now this injury cuts down on the reps he apparently desperately needs. Coker seems to be getting worse instead of better.

Even though the QB competition is still up in the air, Barnett's name always seems to be at the top when it comes to performance. Don't be surprised if we start a freshman QB this year.

What's happened to Cornwell & Alex Morris?

 ???

 ???

The reports I've seen from the insiders on other sites, it's been Barnett at the top, and then Cornwell/ Morris as a tossup, pretty much. Bateman would do well to move to another position.

A true freshman who's that talented to start for Bama in the SEC? Wow.

Blake B may be the best, most talented QB prospect we've had in years.  To me, definitely the best since AJ.  Other teams have started freshmen at QB and done well.  Why not us?

He was here for spring ball so he's not starting from scratch in fall camp.

If he's not the starter for game one, he may well be by mid season.

I will say this, if he is good enough to start now boy he is going to be good in a year or so for sure. RTR!

So how did Coker go from toss up between he and Jameis Winston two years ago to not good enough to beat out a true freshman two years later?

Well, it's speculation.  Let's take a breath and consider...

1. Coker has a foot injury, somewhere between an ingrown toenail and an amputation;
2. Barnett is getting the press coverage, but he needs to gain some more muscle and maturity;
3. Cornwell is close to Barnett (ahead in preparation; behind in potential);
4. Scrimmage this week may help determine a leader, but it's still very likely that Coker will start against Wisconsin IF HIS LEG CAN BE REATTACHED.  :lol2:

Cecil Hurt and Phil Savage both have said this week that the injury to Coker is minor and they expect him to be the starter against Wisconsin. The bigger unknown is if Coker can perform and hold the position.

Alec Morris is getting a lot of reps during media viewing which is a very short time each practice. I have heard he is a game manager but lacks the skills of the others but has the support of the players. I think Morris and Cornwell are fighting for the back up spot which is very important if Coker can not win/hold the job or gets injured.

I think Barnwell will redshirt.

In other words, we will know something for sure on Saturday September 5th in Arlington, Texas.

hey MD I am not sure we will know then if we have a starting QB. I think Jimbo Fisher was blowing smoke the whole time. I wouldn't hang my hat on anything he says. RTR!

Honestly, I think if Bama runs the Henry-cat and the Drake-cat every snap this year they win every game 98-0.

Personally, I think the whole thing about the Alabama QB is overblown. In 2008, who did we have? John (Happy Feet) Parker Wilson. We won 12 games and nearly won the SEC against a great Florida team. In 2009 who did we have? A guy from Texas with an average arm but solid moxie named Greg McElroy. All we did was go undefeated, win the SEC & the National Championship. In 2011, we had a skinny sophomore who led us to NC's in 2011 & 2012. In 2014, we had a lot of concerns and ended up with a slightly above-average QB with a lot of heart and we won the SEC. Like I said, I'm not really worried about the QB.

I agree completely.  This time last year nobody thought Sims would be the QB, and he turned out to be a little better than alright.  It's been the same every time we've replaced a QB since Saban arrived. During the fall practice no one establishes himself as a superstar, the fans scream that the sky is falling. In the first few games the new QB goes through some growing pains, the fans scream that the sky is falling. Then the season ends with Bama one or two wins from the national championship...and the fans start screaming that the sky will fall next year.

I don't know about the sky falling, but what happens if a Freshman starts this year? What a future we would have knowing we have a Heisman type guy was playing QB. RTR!

At least we would probably be set at QB for the next 3 years, if Barnett becomes the starter. We wouldn't have to go through this again for a while.

I imagine the coaches know more about who is going to start than they are telling the media and the players. It is a valuable asset to have competition at every position. Players work harder and it makes everyone better.

FYI -- I just looked out my window and the sky is still up there.

Not sure what this means about the QB situation....

Coker will start and throw 2 TD passes against Wisconsin. No need to worry.

 #+, gotta give ya an e-cred for being bold KoKoPuf. I think you might be off a little though, I am not sure but I wonder if Blake don't get the starting nod because of his athletic ability. Our run game will punish Wisconsin if the coaches don't go away from the run like they did in the playoff last year. JMHO. RTR!
