Eli Gold will continue his role as Alabama football's play-by-play voice through 2017 after signing a four-year contract extension.

Gold has called every Crimson Tide football game since 1989, which includes two national championship games (1992, 2009).

The guy is a lousy announcer who doesn't keep you advised of the down, yardage, time, etc. If the only requiement to be the Tide announcer is that he loves the Crimson TIde, then I can think of at least 3 million persons who would be qualified. He's part of the ole boy network with Mal Moore. We need to join the 21st Century and get someone a lot better.

I agree with MD on this one. I waited on my respond to see how how it would take before a negative comment. We need to give Eli a gold watch and thank him for his many years of service. I rarely listen to a game on radio because they are all telvised these days. Eli likes to hear himself talk and use big words but he does not do a good job of calling the game. Down, distance, clock, score... how hard can it be. He was equally bad at basketball. Chris Stewart was a big improvement when he starting calling the basketball games a few years ago. I would like him to call the football games as well. He does a great job with basketball and baseball. BTW, he also loves Alamba sports too.

We will have to agree to disagree. I am a fan of Eli. True professional. After his 4 year extension he will probably get another. Not only is he an announcer, he is a true fan as well.

Eli is the voice of the Tide. He is great at replays and highlights. My problem with him is he does not keep you informed of the key elements of the game. On radio you have to constantly give the down, distance, time and score. It is much different from TV. It is hard for me to listen to a Bama radio broadcast without complainting that Eli needs to stop talking and report the basics that a radio listener has to have to keep up.

EXACTLY!! Plus, he makes a 2 yard gain sound like a 30 yard run, giving a false impession of what's going on.

He's not the best announcer out there but he is Alabama and that says a lot to me. The guy that backs Eli up is not Alabama and he doesn't get that excited and is rather boring to listen to.

Making a change with Eli might not be the best answer but if someone in the know could get a list of the complaints that radio listerners may have and get this to Eli to improve on, it just might fix the problem.

Folks have been complaining about this for 10 years, that's probably why he got canned as the basketball announcer, he coudn't give a clear picture of what was going on on the court. It proves to me he doesn't care what the fans think.  We can do a LOT better than him.

Eli Gold's Bio

He started "Calling All Sports" on WERC in the early 1980s. It was one of the first sports talk radio shows on in the evenings in Birmingham area.

I remember him calling the Birmingham Bulls hockey. To this day he calls NASCAR's Sprint Cup and Nationwide series plus arena league football and NASCAR live. He has been a member of MRN broadcast team (Motor Racing Network) since 1976.

He use to have to fly to Daytona each week for NASCAR Live. Now he has an in home radio studio. He was also with Birmingham's channel 6 FOX affilate, with Scott Richards and Janet Hall but left that to go back full time on radio. Rick Karley took over after Eli left channel 6.

Coach Perkins let John Forney go in 1983. Hired Paul Kennedy left Doug Layton as color.
Then during 1986, Bill Curry's first year they brought back John Forney with Layton. Mr. Forney, bless his soul, struggled bad for 2 years from old age and being away from radio. Then Eli was hired.

I have met Eli and talked with him several times on flights to Florida. Could not meet a kinder gentleman. He has lived in Vestavia Hills Alabama for 25 years or more?

Like I said. I am a fan. Eli's not perfect, people that are live on the air for 4 hours are gonna make gaffs. He makes uip for those gaffs with his loyality to The Crimson Tide.

Well, I like him.  He'll never be as good as Jack Cristil (the best in the SEC over the past 3-4 decades).

I can sway the part of the NASCAR crowd that does NOT follow football to be Bama fans when I tell them he is the "Voice of the Crimson Tide".
