No. 2 Alabama softball defeats No. 1 Georgia 6-4; Crimson Tide goes for three-game sweep Sunday afternoon

TUSCALOOSA -- Kelsi Dunne threw a life vest on a game Alabama had controlled at times with ease.

That's part of the deal facing an SEC rival like Georgia, the No. 1 team in the country. The second-ranked Crimson Tide made its case for the nation's top ranking after outlasting the Bulldogs for a 6-4 win Saturday night in front 3,261 fans. That set the all-time attendance record for the second time in three days.

Alabama will go for the three-game sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:30. Georgia has lost seven straight against the Tide at Rhoads Stadium, its last win here March 31, 2007.

"You don't play in front of 3,200 (fans) too often," Alabama coach Patrick Murphy said. "They're into and loud. We try to protect the turf as much as we can."

Dunne relieved Alabama freshman Jackie Traina, who steered the Tide through six innings and seven strikeouts.

The Bulldogs were threatening with a pair of base runners to begin the seventh when Dunne grabbed the ball.

Early on, it appeared Alabama (28-1, 4-0 SEC) was en route to a romp.

No. 2 Tide Strikes Early to Down No. 1 Georgia

TUSCALOOSA | Courtney Conley got over. Whitney Larsen got pranked. Jackie Traina got saved.

And the second-ranked University of Alabama softball team got its second straight victory over No. 1 Georgia on Saturday at Rhoads Softball Stadium, winning 6-4 in front of a school-record crowd of 3,261 to clinch the best-of-three series.

Alabama (28-1 overall, 4-0 in Southeastern Conference) will go for the sweep and try to extend its winning streak to 12 games in today's 1:30 p.m. series finale.

The Crimson Tide rode a six-run outburst in the second inning to victory, with all the runs coming on two mighty swings.

It was another great win for the team, had a lot of fun at the game. Getting to see the Georgia coach get tossed from the game was the icing on the cake. The fans really let the few dogs have it pretty good.

Everybody needs to go out today if you're looking for some Sunday afternoon entertainment, let's see if we can surpass the 3,200 that was there last night. RTR!!
