We're getting a really nice refund from the IRS so I'm thinking about purchasing one even though I haven't discussed my thoughts with Mrs Nalt yet...I actually do need one too which she realizes so that might help my argument.  I need one with a front-end loader and preferably four-wheel drive.  I don't want a really big tractor though.  Probably a 30-40 hp would be fine.

Any ideas on how much I should expect to pay and do you have any particular brands/models that you would recommend?

Something like this would probably fit my needs...I also like the Kubota tractors too...

This would be perfect if I can find a good used one that I can afford...

I just bought a Kubota L4400 a couple of days ago.  That might be bigger than you're looking at.  I know it's a long way from you, but I would strongly recommend beshears tractor in Anniston.

I shopped John Deere and you just dont get as much tractor, or as good a warranty, etc.  I see all that john deere marketing everywhere and I think they have to pay for it somehow.

What HP are you looking for?  I am very familiar with a lot of the john deere and kubota models, I shopped for quite a while.

In my OP I stated that I'm looking for something in the 30-40hp range.  Anniston isn't too far if I can get a good tractor at a good price.  Not looking for a new one though...

Sorry, I missed that, mine is a 45 HP.

I shopped a lot of used tractors too.  If you look around enough, you can get a good old ford 2000 or similar.  That is a lot of tractor and you can get a nice one for around 5.

Do you have a trailer?  If so, I would watch ebay, I saw a lot of good ones on there too.

And be sure to look at tractor house a lot of tractor dealers are real good about listing their used ones.

And finally, tractor by net.com is a great forum for talking tractors and comparing prices.

Thanks.  I'll check those sites out when I have the time.  Another good site for all things tractor is mytractorforum.com.  Good people there with a vast source of knowledge.

Is everybody going to start looking into buying tractors now that the general has one? I'll have to wait until I get a steady job (plus some actual land; I doubt the people at our apartment complex would appreciate me tearing up their well-manicured ..... sidewalks  Grin)

NALT - How important is the loader?

You have to get a 4wd if you get a loader.  Be careful about these 2wd's with loaders.

That's whats going to cause a jump in the price and make it harder find what you're wanting.  You can get a good old 2wd for 2500-4000 bucks easy, once  you start talking loader and 4wd they get harder to find at reasonable prices.

Good luck.

Very 2wd JD in Huntsville

Very nice Case 2wd in Wedowee

Nice Kubota 4wd in Montgomery but only 26HP

Wow - a little Pricey, but a good deal and you would be set.  MF 4wd with several implements in Foley

Probably too new and more than you want to spend, but a nice 2009 Kubota in Ashville

That's all I see out there right now unless you're wanting to approach 20k.  But watch tractorhouse and maybe call around and give your number to these guys.  A lot of the dealers take tractors as trade ins, but used tractors sell very fast, so the turn over is high, if you keep watching for a while, what you want for the price you are looking will turn up.
