Hey FB,need to buy a plane?

That may be all I can fly if the FAA doesn't approve my medical certificate this time.  Late last year I was diagnosed with sleep apnea.  But since I am diagnosed and getting treatment - I may lose the privilege.  BUT if I had gone undiagnosed and drowsily skyward I would be fine....  Oh well.

Sport pilot is too restrictive.  If I get denied a medical then I can't even exercise sport pilot privileges...  Once you taste the freedom of flight you don't want to be told you have to fly in a go-cart instead of a Ferrari.  I have to get my AME and sleep doc together to petition the FAA for a special issuance medical certificate.  My apnea index is 29  (a 4 will get you on the CPAP machine).  They may require a MWT - maintenance wakefulness test - which means I go back to the sleep lab, sit around for a few hours then they put me in a recliner and turn out the lights for 40 minutes.  I fail if I fall asleep.  Now how many 40 year old men can stay awake, in a dark room, IN A RECLINER?

Can you drink lots of coffee before the recliner test?

I recently had to fill out lots of paperwork for a patient who is a commercial pilot.  He is on cholesterol med.  The paperwork was extensive and included lab results for the past cpl of years before he was on the medication, the last cpl of results post medication and info on the medication.

It was nice of him to bring me coupons for free drinks from SouthWest as a bribe to get it done quicker.  I'm not a flyer though.

That's right.  That's why a lot of guys who fly around in th go-karts anyway just stop going to renew their medical.  If it just expires they are still legal, but if they go in to renew it and fail they are in trouble.

I seriously considered that for a few seconds.  Even though I don't own an airplane, and won't until the kids are through with school, I have access to several aircraft that are outside the scope of the sport pilot performance criteria.  I can fly those planes for not much more than the cost of the fuel.  I don't have access to a sport pilot certified aircraft that's not on floats.  From my understanding I can't fly a sea plane on a driver's license medical. 

One of my uncle's good friends is a former 777 captain for JAL.  He went in for his 6 month class I medical and found out he had a heart problem.  No more class I medical, no more high $$$$  job, no reprieve at all...
