Title: OT - BREAKING NEWS - 8.9 earthquake in Japan
Post by: ssmith general on March 11, 2011, 05:15:30 AM
"TOKYO -- A powerful tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan's recorded history slammed the eastern coast Friday, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control. Authorities said at least 32 people were killed.

The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles from the epicenter.

A tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific, including areas as far away as South America, the entire U.S. West Coast, Canada and Alaska."

Probably, also look for another large quake somewhere ... South America or Turkey, or maybe even California or up in the cascadia

Holy geese.  CNN is showing cars drifting away and worse.  I was in a 7.3 magnitude earthquake a couple of years ago in Central America; couldn't stand up or even get out of bed (90 secs).  This is HUGE.

No, that's a dead rift and it's movement is unrelated.

There have already been 74 quakes there this morning.  Many 7.0 and higher.

Has there ever been an earthquake anywhere that has been measured 8.9 or bigger? That is by far the most powerful quake I've ever heard of. And yes 32 deaths is a MOST optimistic report.

Yes.  Chili and Alaska have had 9's before.

But this is definitely one of the strongest ever recorded.

There is a missing piece we dont know yet, but there is a relationship between earthquakes across the globe.  Energy cannot be released somewhere and not be added somewhere else.  You would expect periods of increased activity to correlate.

That said, there has been no increase in earthquakes.  As your resident geologist I assure you the world is not ending.

Thanks.  Incredible.  Think what this magnitude of earthquake would do to San Francisco.  Ironically, just yesterday I saw some color photos of the 1906 (?) SF earthquake.  They were just found (color; rare back then).

It's hard to say, but with an earthquake of that size there is certainly some potential.  There are areas that are more prone to tsunami's on the west coast than most.  My guess would be a pretty good impact on hawaii and some kind of small hit in oregon.

Most interesting will be to watch worldwide quake activity over the next couple of weeks.

I'm really taxing my memory here, but I remember learning in high school that an earthquake is something like twice as powerful per decimal as the the previous on the Richter scale, meaning that a 6.5 earthquake is twice as powerful as a 6.4 earthquake. Am I remembering that correctly?

No, it's a log scale.  Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude.

It's logarithmic.  Each whole number is 31 times stronger than the previous.  Each 0.2 is twice as strong.

The most horrible video is the wall of debris (cars, houses, trees, boats) rushing across neighborhoods in Japan.  It's taken from a chopper, and you can see traffic on the roads trying to outrun it (NOT) and intersections with cars stopped and people running.  The wall of water finally hit a levee along the ocean and all of the debris spilled over as a muddy, mile-long wall of debris that made a huge waterfall. :o :o :o

Not that simple.

I checked here to be sure.  Wiki wrong?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale)

Having video links at work blocked, SUCKS!!!   >:(

The most horrible video is the wall of debris (cars, houses, trees, boats) rushing across neighborhoods in Japan.  It's taken from a chopper, and you can see traffic on the roads trying to outrun it (NOT) and intersections with cars stopped and people running.  The wall of water finally hit a levee along the ocean and all of the debris spilled over as a muddy, mile-long wall of drbris that made a huge waterfall. :o :o :o

A couple of them seem to get away.

"Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released, and each increase of 0.2 corresponds to a doubling of the energy released."

Sorry, I was off by .6

That, to me, is why an 8.9 is unimaginable.

Also salient that it was a shallow epicenter.

Wow, 24km is very shallow.

The pictures of Japan are just heartbreaking. Seeing the cars in the water with their flashers still on - seeing the people disappear, it's just terrible. :(
Prayers to the people of Japan and all families trying to contact family members and loved ones. :(

The 4th large earthquake in a short period of time on this planet. Preacher, anything we should know about?

There is a missing piece we dont know yet, but there is a relationship between earthquakes across the globe.  Energy cannot be released somewhere and not be added somewhere else.  You would expect periods of increased activity to correlate.

That said, there has been no increase in earthquakes.  As your resident geologist I assure you the world is not ending.
So I need to put off the visit to the girl cashier at the BP station? Let me know.

I have some good news...

Japan has the most censors of anywhere in the world.  There will be a lot of really good data collected from this...

Smitty, what effects around the world do you expect to see from this? I know Hawaii is under a Tsunami warning and I heard fox say that the U.S. West coast could be affected. Your thoughts?

Now they've had hundreds.  A lot of those of HUGE...  Major movement going on...

229 quakes on the map in the last week, but after the big one yesterday there were 80.  So that's about 150 in the last 24 hours.

I saw an article this morning that said the earthquakes there have moved Japan's coastline 8 feet and moved Earth 4 inches on it's axis.

They just reported on ABC that an explosion occurred at a nuclear reactor and there is concern of a meltdown.
