I've tried all the starting tricks. The choke is either on or off - no in between. And I try to keep the chain tight. The problem with the jumping chain seems to be caused by small limbs. I'm cutting some privet that is threatening to take over North Alabama and it is a pain in the a**! I don't have a problem with the chain jumping off when cutting larger trees. A cordless Sawzall might work great, maybe a good excuse to buy one. The hedgetrimmer won't work on the larger privet, some of the trunks are 4".
New spark plug. Dry gas.

Where do you live?  I can come over to look at it and see I can fix it,or cut the stuff for you, or I can loan you my old ryobi.

If your chain is jumping off, your chain is definitly way too loose as mentioned earlier. Better read those how to start intructions real good if it's a fairly new saw, if it's an old saw I would take it to the shop, this Ethanol is causing a lot of problems for the small cycle engines. I always mix Stabil in the gas for everything that I have that uses gasoline.

I was thinking about this some more yesterday, and I am thinking maybe the sprocket is damaged and causing the chain throwing.

I'm through blaming the saw.

Recently I was discusing my chain saw "won't start" problems with some friends and one of them said he had a saw that WOULD NOT start and if I could start it he would give it to me. I took the saw, fairly new one, home and read the instructions on how to start it. On the third pull it fired but did not start, I pushed the choke in half way and pulled and it started.

I immediatly called him and did not say hello when he answered, justed reved the saw up a few times for him to hear it, I won't write the names that he called me. I didn't keep his saw but I have been having a good time teasing him. The problem that I had with my saw was the carb needed some repair.

Common. Mixing oil and gas with a dirty funnel or some such foreign debris problem.

I was reading that you should always use those little single use two-cycle oil containers, that way you always get exactly 50:1.

I bought a few of them and it's certainly easier, more expensive, but no measuring and even better no super rich fuel (I tend to err on the safe side).

I eyeball the mix into a container just for oil+gas. Every tool has its mix requirement but 50:1 works in all. JMHO. BTW, it is better to err on the lean side rather than the rich side.

Why?  I was reading to can get cylinder damage from too lean, while too rich is just messy?

The "shade tree" guys say run lean. But yeah, the need for oil is ever present. If I am smoking, I add more gas.

Sometimes limbs break off in the tops of trees. I tie a rope to my belt and climb the tree. Then I hoist the saw up and start it, balancing on a limb. It had better crank.

That sounds like an insurance commercial waiting to happen.  Cheesy

Thanks for all the tips, guys. Obviously y'all are better with a chain saw than me. And BamaWV, I have a broken limb in a maple in my front yard, if you would come down and climb the tree and cut it out for me I would really appreciate it. Actually, I just want to watch!
