They are hard to start, cantankerous as an old Evinrude outboard, the chain jumps off the bar and just generally frustrate the hell out of me. I have a Poulan and that may be part of the problem, but my buddy has a Husqvarna and it's just as bad.
Your saw came with a tool for adjusting the bar to increase/decrease tension on the chain. When starting, hold in right hand with trigger depressed. Pull once with indicator in the choke position. It'll "cough". Then flip indicator to start and pull the cord again. So easy even GMac can do it.

Make sure you add bar oil every time you add gas.
^KEY. I adjust my tension with enough slack that when I pull the chain up from the bar, I can still get my index finger beneath.

I used to keep mine that loose, but the guy at stihl said you just want to be able to pull it separate from the bar and it needs to still turn easily.

Either way, I havent thrown a chain since I first started working with a chainsaw.  Nor are they difficult to start if you know how to work the choke.  Even my ryobi POS starts.

Most guys say tighten till yu can get a quarter between chain and bar.

I've tried all the starting tricks. The choke is either on or off - no in between. And I try to keep the chain tight. The problem with the jumping chain seems to be caused by small limbs. I'm cutting some privet that is threatening to take over North Alabama and it is a pain in the a**! I don't have a problem with the chain jumping off when cutting larger trees. A cordless Sawzall might work great, maybe a good excuse to buy one. The hedgetrimmer won't work on the larger privet, some of the trunks are 4".

I did not know removing the whole bush was an option. Put a chain around the trunks and "snatch" the whole thing out of the ground. Or use the chain saw for thick limbs and hedge trimmers for small stuff.

Exactly where in North Alabama are you having these issues with a chain saw?  I might know someone that can help you... Cool

I had an unsightly privot on my property the woman has been bugging me to remove for five years. I took this opportunity to go yank it out of the ground (with a pickup and tow strap) and drag it to the "burn" pile. My screensaver didn't even kick in.

I'd like to shout to chainsaw chaps.  Get them.  The girl bought them and made me wear them, took a kickback today just above the knee.  No injury.   Applause E-Cred
