Title: Question about the new December signing day.
Post by: SeniorTSM on May 22, 2017, 02:18:56 PM
So if a player signs in Dec and then the coach leaves for another job. Are they still locked in to that school?

Also, if a coach (like kiffin or Smart) are leaving for a new job, does it make more sense for them to leave now even though their current team may still have games left to play.

These seem like things they should have thought of. :tinfoil:

TSM, I would think they are locked in once they sign, even in December. The ones that sign in February are locked in even if the coach leaves after that.

The second part of your question: I think it depends on the circumstances. Kiffin's heart was obviously not in it once FAU came calling. Him leaving, IMO, was the only option.

I agree with you 2Starter. But i think it drives coaches even more to leave early if they have that chance, because they have to get players signed in Dec now.

And i kind of think it players should be allowed out if a Coach leaves. I believe players can transfer if a coach leaves and they don't have to sit a year, so if they just signed in Dec and the coach leaves in Jan i think they should get to move to the Feb signing somewhere else if they choose.

I think there is something in the NCAA rules that binds the player to the school after they have signed, unless the coach agrees to a transfer.

Basketball has an early signing period. The player signs with the school, not the coach. Once a player signs he is locked in to that school regardless if the coach resigns or is fired. A school can opt to release the player allowing him to sign with another school. An example of this is our new basketball commitment Tevin Mack. He signed with VCU before Smart resigned to take the Texas job. Mack requested a release from the school and it was granted. Mack then signed with Texas.

I get that, but a lot of times players are signing to a system also. If they are a spread QB and the new coach is going to go with a power I, then the QB would probably want to move on. Just saying.

You sign with the school so it is the school's choice if they let the player out of the LOI and pursue other schools. Once you enroll you have to sit out a year if you transfer. I do not expect these rules to change.
