Quote
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Georgia and Maryland opened the season with radically different uniforms.

When will Alabama go that route?

Never, as long as Nick Saban is the Crimson Tide's coach.

The subject of uniforms came up in Saban's news conference following Wednesday's practice. It gave him a chance to reiterate feelings that he expressed last season before Alabama made minimal changes when it wore special Nike Pro Combat uniforms for its home game against Mississippi State.

"I think what we wear is a lot bigger than me, and a lot bigger than anyone," Saban said. "It's what everybody's expectation is of what they want to see when Alabama plays football and what they're used to seeing."

Saban's feelings clearly are strong.

"I don't think the coach should change uniforms," he said. "I don't think the coach should change the color of the helmets. I just don't believe that. Now that doesn't mean that's wrong when somebody does that or they think they should do it or whatever."

I had friends in college that always wanted to see the team in black or gray pants, or something else like that.

I hope I never see Alabama in anything other than what I've always seen them.

Agreed.  We had gray pants in high school.  They always looked dirty to me.
Simple is better: crimson and white.

Someone on this thread said Bama needs to do away with the numbers on the helmets. No way. I can remember Bryant saying the numbers let the mommas and daddys pick out their boy in a pile up in Sunday morning's newspaper pictures.

I hate to hear people talk about changing our uniforms. The thing you hear most often is a switch to white helmets. The shine of the crimson helmets as the team takes the field sends chills down by spine. I hope they never change.

1954.  We lost to Rice (us with white helmets)

1968.  Stabler in Cotton Bowl.  We lost to A&M.

I remember us wearing white helmets to the 1968 Cotton Bowl, supposedly to help QB Kenny Stabler see the receivers better.  It didn't work out well for us.

We did win the 1953 Orange Bowl in white helmets.  That's Red Drew.

1962.  We beat Arkansas while wearing our white helmets.

I still don't like them, though.

I don't have a link but to my knowledge the last time we wore white helmets was at Vandy when Ray Perkins was coach. He wanted to wear white helmets if the oppontents helmet was a dark color and vice versa. It must not have gone over well because I don't think we have seen the white helmets since. BTW Vandy jumped out to a big lead but we rallied to win a close game.

The last times I can remember Bama losing to Vandy was in 1969 and 1984. I don't remember white helmets though.  I want to say Watson Brown was Vandy's QB in '84.

We may have lost to Vandy but we at least beat the '83 Opelika News Defending National Champions 17-15 and kept them out of the Sugar Bowl in 1984 - Wrong Way Bo. BYU won the NC that year with a crippled QB beating a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday bowl. Only undefeated team left.

I was at the 1968 Cotton Bowl and don't remember the white helmets.  All I remember is that we lost and it was da#@ cold.

Never liked the white helmets & white unis.  We lost too many games wearing those things.

Coach Bryant used to like for the backs and receivers to wear white helmets for road games and night games to help the QB find them downfield.  But lighting is much better now and I think that issue has gone away.

I was at the '84 game. And went with a Vandy fan.  Sad
