I don't agree with this rule.  So now you can't drive down for a game winning FG and spike the ball in order to get you FG team on the field for the attempt.

I am not sure how I feel about this rule change.

A team seems to be at the mercy of the clock operator in these last second  situations. Too many times I have felt like a team was given too much or not enough time in these situations where tens of a second are critical. It appears to me they are trying to avoid these close calls when the clock operator can determine the outcome of a game.

I think about this and I have a somewhat agreement with "hscoach:I don't agree with this rule.  So now you can't drive down for a game winning FG and spike the ball in order to get you FG team on the field for the attempt."
This was the fun for a long time to watch a team drive 99 yds. Then kick a game winning field goal. Now throwing the ball out of bounds does no good it just uses up precious seconds.
Now I don't think this will apply to Les Miles at all. He could never figure out where to stop the clock anyway. RTR!

You still can but there must be 3 or more seconds left on the clock.

Being an NCAA ref is going to be a rough job this fall.  This rule combined with the new "targeting" rule that ejects players are going to cause some serious turmoil.

This ^. Rarely if ever could a center snap the ball, the qb grip it, pull it back spike it...then the center snap it again, either for a regular offensive play, or a long snap for a kick, in under three seconds. Don't stink up 59 minutes  and 57 seconds of football, and then try to "extend the clock" to try some miraculous come back

I guess this is in response to the Texas - Nebraska Big 12 Championship game in 2009 when Colt ran around in the pocket then threw the ball out of bounds with no time left.  They gave them 1 second back on the clock, then UT ran out to kick the game winning FG.  It was very controversial as to whether or not the clock ran out.  I'm not sure what I think about it yet, but my first reaction is that it just takes the guesswork out of whether there was ANY time left on the clock and just moves it up 3 seconds.  Now all the guesswork will be centered around figuring out if the clock was at 3 instead of 0.

 Huh?

I'm not sure how this will work out, especially in the SEC with the refs we have. I can promise you though that if this new rule can be screwed up in any way, the SEC refs will do it.

Say a team start a play with 30 seconds on the play clock.  They moved the ball down to field goal position.  The teams gets to the ball that has been spotted and the ball is snapped with between 3/4 seconds.  You have time to spike it because as soon as the ball touches the qbs hands he spikes it.  He doesn't have to bring it up above the centers butt.

It doesn't really solve the problem, it just makes it happen 3 seconds earlier.  They should leave the rule alone and just come up with a better way to determine if there was time left on the clock.  Maybe add a few more cameras for video review, one permanently pointed right down each sideline, across each goal line, and across each end line.

Except Colt didn't spike the ball, he threw it down the field.  Way down the field.  But a miracle happened.  The refs determined that the ball went out of bounds with one second left.

But yeah, this rule doesn't change anything, just more opportunity to mess it up.

So you just can't spike the ball?  So I guess an incomplete pass will stop the clock with under 3 seconds.  Instead of spiking the ball, just raise up and drill the line judge.  Shouldn't take more than a second.  Laughing
