Birmingham has built a beautiful ball park in the heart of downtown. They have already passed 100,000 attendance. I want to go to a game there soon. Has anyone been there yet?

Parking can be problematic since construction in the area is on-going. It's right next to Railroad Park, a nice little urban park, around 17 acres, I think.

Beautiful new field. I didn't think there was anything especially bad about the old park out in Hoover, but if you are the BIRMINGHAM Barons, you probably need to be within the city limits of the 'Ham.

The Hoover Met is showing it's age. The newer ball parks are just nicer. Birmingham wanted the Barons back and the Barons wanted a new stadium.

Downtown B'ham is making a comeback. Regions Field is located in Railroad Park. The city leaders have made many terrible decisions but the downtown area is nicer than it has ever been. Developers have renovated a lot of the older buildings and turned them into upscale condos. Five Points in Southside is real nice. There is still bad areas but in general downtown is not the dump it used to be.

Clearing all those abandoned warehouse buildings from 1st ave. South to make way for the stadium didn't hurt, either. Some of those buildings had to be over 75-85 years old, had broken out windows, and were just eyesores. I hope the area continues to grow and regrows itself.

They still play one game at Rickwood each year known as The Rickwood Classic. It is May 29. They will play the Smokies in an afternoon game with both teams wearing throwback uniforms. It is a popular event that will pack the stadium.  Rickwood is the oldest surviving professional baseball park in the United States.

I have fond memories of my Dad taking me to Rickwood to see the B'ham A's. At that time the B'ham minor league team was owned by the Oakland A's and B'ham native Charlie Finley. I think I was about 20 when they decided to let the minor league teams drop the big league name and choose their own name. I was glad B'ham went back to their roots and took the original name of the Barons. The Baron's are now the Chicago White sox Double A team.

Maybe they will bring the dozers back and clean up the crime ridden housing north of of B'ham, that would do wonders for the safety of the fans attending the games. I too am planning on getting up for a game in the very near future.

It is the oldest. Older than Wrigley and Fenway.

Growing up in B'ham and being a baseball player and fan I had many good times at Rickwood. I played several high school games there. B'ham city schools would get to play a game or two there each year when the team was on the road. As a high school kid it was a real treat to play there.

If you have ever been to Rickwood you may remember the clock on top of the left field score board. It was an old clock so it had hands, not digital. My Dad and I was there for a game on a school night, I think I was in the 5th grade. It was getting late and I keep asking him what time it is. He finally asked can't you see that clock. I told him no. When we got home he told my Mom I needed to go to the eye doctor and I have been wearing glasses ever since. That old clock and score board is still there.

Here are a couple of links for Rickwood Field history.

Followup on attendance at Regions Park. The question is, will fans keep coming back.
