"We have torn up the contract for James Franklin and rewarded him and his family with a new contract with extended years and a substantial increase in compensation," Vanderbilt vice chancellor for athletics David Williams said Friday during a news conference. "Vanderbilt's position has been and continues to be to not go into details of a contract. But let it be said that we have awarded the coach and his family a new contract, not only for what he has brought here, but what he will bring in the future."

He did a good job in his first year. He got Vandy to a bowl. Who would have thunk it? Personally I would have waited another year or two to see how it is going but Vandy knows a successful coach will bolt for another opportunity at the drop of a hat. I guess they are doing what they can to keep him.

Notre Dame did same thing with Charlie Weis and re upped his contract after 1 good season.

Alabama tried to do same with Fran, offering a large contract upgrade in August before 2002 season.

I think he's the real deal. I would love to see Vandy no longer being the nerdy kid in class who does the other kids homework. I'm a sucker for an underdog..as long as they never beat Bama

What a great job he did this year. The only real azz whooping they took this year was from Bama. They made the most of what they had. Kudos to Coach Franklin.

Fran the Fink and fat azz Weiss were established successful coaches at the time. Franklin is trying to make a name for himself. Big difference.
