Vandy DT Says He's Glad Franklin Left for Penn State

Interesting comments by the DT from Vandy.

Vanderbilt defensive lineman Adam Butler said this week he was "glad" James Franklin left the school for Penn State.

"I don't want to say I'm glad Coach Franklin is gone but then again I am," Butler told CBSSports.com during SEC media days.

Butler, a sophomore from Duncanville, Texas, is delighted with first-year coach Derek Mason, the former Stanford defensive coordinator.

"He's talking about going to the SEC championship and winning it."

"We're perceived as being on the come up," Butler said. "Prior to Franklin we had goals to get four to six wins. When Franklin arrived it was going to bowl games. Now that Coach Mason is here it's about the SEC championship."

Vandy will never win the SEC but the players have to buy into the coaches expectations.

I see some incredible statements being made. As someone stated if you do not buy in to what your coaches offer, then you are in the wrong place to start with. JMHO. RTR!

Yeah, I hear what ya'll are saying. But why stop at SEC Championship, why not national championships? 

While the team needs a goal, and the players need to buy in, I'm not sure even Spurrier started with an SEC Championship goal, maybe it was 10 wins, or win the SEC East.  (Saban of course did have a BCS championship goal, but he had the experience and results to back it up.) 

Often times I hear new coaches talk of national championships, and it sounds hollow.  They haven't done anything yet.  And a year or two later, when expectations are not any closer, the players get disillusioned, the fan base gets restless, and the team starts to slide to mediocrity.  Franklin had realistic goals, and the new coach is trying to build on that, perhaps winning the East, 10 wins, some intermediate goal, a stepping stone in the process, not straight to a championship without any preliminary basis upon which to build.  That's really my observation.
