I might change my pick. I'm thinking about it now. I just don't know. Every team that plays in Hawaii is screwed over by the refs. If you want to see officiating at it's worst just watch a Hawaii game. What do others CRS members think?

Looking at that spread on the ND-USF matchup, those points must be for playing in South Bend, b/c I am not totally sure ND is 10.5 pts better than USF. Of course, I'm also not sure what USF has coming back this year either.

COrrect.  We will use the thread to score.  So any edits after the game starts and we will have to discount the whole thing.  But I think up til 11 am on Saturday (for this week) is pretty reasonable.

I remember in 1978, I gambled on 2 games. I won a hundred dollars on one game and lost a hundred dollars on another. Then I had to pay $10 for sugar. I never gambled again after that.

I used to do very well betting on the games, but in 1981, I placed $400 in bets one day and was laid off of work the next. I lost every bet and haven't bet on games since.

I went through it pretty quick this morning.  All will be double checked when I enter them in the spreadsheet, which I will do shortly.  It's on the other computer.

I was a junior at UA in fall of 2001.  I put $300 into my online account on sportsbook.com at the beginning of the year.  By the end of the year, I had ran that up to $4500, with my biggest score coming on $900 from the Bama-Arkansas game.  The Hogs were a big favorite and I got +280 on Bama heads up.  We killed them.

Long story short I ended up losing $1800 of that $4500 on New Years Day on bowl games.  Haven't bet on football since except a friendly bar bet here and there.

A'burn defenseless. I didn't read this anywhere. I heard it towards the end of the game when the boogs' announcers were giving all the reasons why they were losing.

Booger eating morons' defense let that powerful Utah State offense drive on them all afternoon, gave up 4 long drives: 2-16 play drives and 2-14 play drives for TDs.

Now that is a SEC caliber defense. Not!

When I was looking up next week games I noticed that the booger line opened at MSU -2 and had already moved to -6.5.  That's a big move.

That's a huge move.  I would have liked to get in on some of that -2 action.

I have seen the line move like that during the course of a week, but not in less than 24 hours. Also when have you seen a line change that direction away from the home? Means all the money right now is on bulldawgs.

Well I love Alabama with my heart, I have been a fan since 1963, nothing will ever change that. Now I am taking PSU and the points because if our Offense doesn't show more next week than they did this week we are in trouble. Now I won 2 last week so if I am that pitiful this week then I may loose them all, rofl. I don't know if CNS told them not to block as well as they can or what, but as I have read theie were no feet moving, our backs were being hit in the backfield. I think this game goes down to a 1 to 3 point game maybe won by Jeremy with his leg on the last play. RTR!

What do you guys think about throwing out each players lowest score, or two lowest scores or something like that.

It would help people not quit when they get behind and also encourage late starters.

I started to suggest that a couple days ago.  There may be a week where someone's schedule just doesn't cooperate for picking.  I'd hate for several people to quit because they miss a week.  Would be great to finish the year with everyone still participating.

What if we increase the number of e-creds for first place based on how many people you beat?  Last week we had 22 people participate, so Hannibal Lecter beat 21 people.  So maybe he should get 21 instead of 15.  Maybe then it kind of becomes contagious, with the prize increasing every time someone enters the contest for the week.

Hmmm... what if everybody got 1 e-cred for every person they beat?  Then as long as you don't come in last place you will get something.

Just thinking out loud.  What do you guys think?  If we can come up with a twist that makes it exciting to play each week even if you have never won, or if you didn't even play because you didn't know about it, then I think we will be onto something.  It would be cool if I could rig up a jackpot counter that shows how many e-creds are in the pot for 1st place.

Of course something like this would have to be done automatically by the web site software.  It is just too much work to do manually every week.

I think I am going to start building us some pages to store all of this stuff in the database instead of a post.  Then I can pretty much do whatever I want with it.  If I can get that done pretty soon then we will have lots of options.

I also thought about a random prize that we award to someone who participated at the end of the year.  Each week that you enter your picks gives you one chance to win the random prize.  That way even if you come in last place every single week you can still win a big prize if you are the lucky one to win the random drawing.  The more weeks that you participate, the better your chances are at winning the random prize.

Seems a little excessive.  Maybe if we get many more you start awarding top 5 instead of top 3 and up the for 1-3?

Well I have most of the database work done for this now.  I have typed all of the data for week 1 into the database.  My SQL code correctly calculates the scores, matching the official results exactly.

I do have some questions about calculating the scores though.  What happens if the points are -10, and the margin of victory is exactly 10?  Let's take this week's UA @ Penn State game.  UA is favored to win by 10 points.  If I pick UA and the score is 20-10, is that pick considered right or wrong?  What if I picked Penn State, would that be considered right or wrong?  What happens in Vegas with this scenario?

Another idea.  Maybe we keep the scoring the way it is now, perhaps expanding to the top 5 or maybe some other minor tweaks, but then give everyone some e-creds each week they participate as soon as they post their picks.  What do you guys think about that?  I think it gives everyone a little incentive to participate all the way to the end even if they are coming in last place every week.

push is a no-bet.  We can either give 0.5 points or none since they cancel out anyway.

Anyway, I want to change my pick from BYU to Texas.  Don't know what I was thinking -- Texas should win by more than a touchdown -- BYU only had one offensive score against Ole Miss.

Also, change rushing yards to 92, which still might be high.

Awesome, prizes for last place.  That gives me something to shoot for.  Can we call this the Upward Pickem Game?

I like the idea of ecred for placings.  Whatever is easiest to do -- top 5 makes some sense, but participation has its merits too. 

It might be OK to give everyone a point when the score equals the spread -- the pick wasn't wrong, so the person will be listed as (for example) getting 6/10 instead of 5/10 correct, which seems more accurate in that circumstance.

I would like to see a list of the winning picks each week if not too much trouble.

Oh yeah, I forgot that there is a time limit to how long you can edit a post.  It is to prevent people from going back and changing the conversation after the fact.  For now post any changes in here and one of the mods will go fix up your official post.  This problem will all go away pretty soon once I get the web page built for entering your picks.

I am planning to have a web page you can go to and see the winning picks, and maybe some check marks and X's by your picks to show if you got it right.

For the tie scenario I think I will go with the no bet idea for now.  So that week there would only be 9 games instead of 10.  It won't count for you or against you, regardless of what you picked.

Makes sense, there is no reason to give everyone a half-point, just complicates the numbers.  I was still deciding how to handle it.  I was gonna wait til it came up and poll the group.

Yep, that should be it.  Eventually I will try to have some admin pages for you to enter that stuff into, but for the first pass I will probably need to stick them in the DB manually once you are ready.  The key next step is to get the page where you enter your picks done.  Once that one is done I can run my code that reads the database and calculates all of the scores.

That's neat you can do that stuff, and I thought my spreadsheet was nifty (sorting by two variables).  ;D

Welcome TB. Let's say Bama is the favorite over Penn State by 10.5, you'll see that Bama is   -10.5. If you think Bama will win by more than 10.5, you pick Bama. If you think they win by less than 10.5 or that Penn State will win, then you would pick Penn State.

Whoever is favorite, take the "spread" and subtract it from their score at the end of the game to see who "wins".

Yep, I did them last night.  I will be posting them today once I get some of my code moved over to the live server.

I just posted the results.  The sidebar on the left has been updated with the Week 2 Winners.  You can click on the link at the bottom of the sidebar to see the full results.  This information is being pulled from the database now, so we are one step closer to having the web site do all the work for this.  I will be adding new and better pages for the contest as time allows.

Yep, looks like a tough list. 45.5 point spread for Bama?  Could easily happen, depends on who plays, and how much training Saban wants to do.  We might even see Blake Sims at QB.

This is a tough list to pick straight up, much less the lines.

CNS will have Tide's QBs working on the passing game for the first 3 quarters. Then with a large lead going into the 4th, start working on the running game. Similiar to KS game plan last week.

Dang, I don't know if I can pick UA with a 45.5 point spread.  CNS could easily shut it down before we get to that point.

Unfortunately I won't have the web page ready for us to use to make our picks, so we will need to make a thread like we did the last 2 weeks.  I will try to update the sidebar tonight.

I updated the sidebars.  It shows the games for Week 3 now.  It is pulling this information from the database now, so we are one step closer to having the web site do all the work for us.

I also changed the Winner's box to show the top 5 like I discussed previously.  I awarded the e-creds for the week 2 winners:

Stanford just scored a TD.  They lead 23-10 now.  If this holds up they will cover, but there is still a quarter and a half to go yet.  I've had enough for one day though.

It's a good thing I don't try to make a living at this because it was a tough week of picking for me.  I just can't bring myself to pick against Alabama or for Notre Dame or Texas no matter what the point spread. 

Well I lost 3 games I know and probably 4 games or more. Sha I ain't no good at this picking stuff, I guess my heart gets in the way or hopes. RTR!

That is my problem too.  I let my heart have too much say this time.  Picking against Auburn finally worked though.  :D

I am working on putting the data into the database for last week so I can calculate the scores and list the winners.  I can't find an official stat for the tiebreaker.  It seems they don't list the stats by half any more.  I suspected this might be a problem, so I checked the ESPN stats at half time during the game.  It listed total yards for Bama at 282 at that time and I believe that is correct.  However if you know of an official source for stats by half, please let me know and I will make sure that number is correct.

I just posted the scores for week 3.  Congratulations to the winners.  I will wait a couple of days before awarding the e-creds to give everyone a chance to double check their scores.  Please let me know if your score is not correct.  I am confident that the score calculation logic is correct, but I am still manually typing your picks into the database.  It is a very tedious process, so it is very possible that I typed one of your picks in wrong.

Is it possible to automatically subtract each players lowest two scores? 

I chose 378 or whatever because I wanted an obnoxiously large number.

We don't have one yet.  Since we've only had 3 weeks, when we drop 2 weeks that leaves you with only 1 week.  So the overall standings are just everyone's best week.  I guess I am in the lead since my best week was 8-1.  HL was 8-2 the first week, and Sqwig was 8-2 this week.  I guess that makes me ahead of them in the loss column.  :dunno:

Then pretty much everybody who picked 7-3 at least one of the 3 weeks is grouped together in 3rd right now.

I suppose we would sum all of the tie breakers and use the cumulative deviation as the overall tiebreaker.

I will try to have an overall leader page pretty soon once we have a couple of weeks that count.  I am trying to get the entry page done next since that will save me a ton of work when calculating the scores.

I guess on the entry page you will click on one team or the other so the DB knows.  I remember doing this years ago and the guy who ran it gave 3 letter codes for the teams that you had to use.  Basically if his spreadsheet didnt take it then you got a zero.  Needless to say, people just are not that good at following instructions and it was always a issue with someone, quite comical actually.

I can do better than that.  :D

I plan to have something like "1.  Do you think Notre Dame will beat Pittsburgh by at least 7 points?"  and a spot for you to click on yes or no.  That should make it simple enough for everybody to understand.

I just changed a setting that will allow you to edit your post for up to 10 days so that everyone can go back and change their picks without requiring a mod.  I had this set to 1 day to prevent people from going back and changing old posts after people had already replied to it.  I will leave it at 10 days until I get the web page finished for entering your picks on a form, but I will probably change it back once that form is finished.  You will be able to edit your picks on the form right up until the deadline.

I have made some pretty good progress on several of the web pages.  So far these or informational pages that allow you to see things like final scores, what the score was with the points added to the underdog, what the correct pick should have been, what different people picked with a check mark beside the ones they got correct, etc.  I may turn some of those pages on for everybody sometime this weekend.

Thanks for reminding me.  I will do it right now.  Also, I am not sure if I gave any e-creds for some of the pick the score contests yet.  It seems like the first week Marshal Dillon won but I never gave him anything.  At that time we hadn't decided how many to give, but I like the idea of 1 e-cred per entry and winner take all.  The more people who enter, the harder it is to win, so the prize should go up accordingly.  If there are others, please let me know.

Too much importance placed on tiebreaker. It should only be used in the case of a tie for first. Nothing more. 

So how do you decide who gets 2nd?

You'd have to be a pretty crummy picker to get a minus 3 (-3).

I just cobbled together an ad hoc query to see the current over all standings without dropping the lowest 2 scores.  This gives us 3 weeks worth of games.  Eventually we will have 12 weeks worth of games and there will be even more separation.

By the end of the season there will be separation at the top and bottom, with the middle all bunched together.  The deviation probably won't come into play in the top spots (or bottom for that matter).

Big games today.  Here's the guess at the early ones:

1.  "Annual running of the Lattimore" will play out in Columbia.  I've got 175 yards, but against the Boogs he could get 250.  USCe by a BIG margin.

2.  Kentucky at LSU.  Tough to predict.  LSU has all sorts of reasons to have a letdown, but I expect them to completely shut down KY.  Even if it's only 30-0, that beats the line.  More likely 48-3.

3.  Texas A&M at Arky.  Lots of hits, lots of injuries, and lots of scoring.  Maybe 30-29, but I expect Arky can win it.  A&M has a better D than usual (for them), so Wilson may be mashed often.

4.  MSU at UGA.  I hope UGA bites a hunk out of the State boys.  UGA has the better QB.  They should win by 20.  MSU was overrated again.

Tough pickings on the games this week.  Not a lot of marquee matchups and there is no line for Florida at LSU.

A lot of big lines.  I tried to spread out the times and get as much SEC as possible.

I sent the games to SC so they should be up soon.

You are correct, not a big weekend.  Even though it is Texas OU.  Other non-SEC games which could be close or at least interesting include Miami v. VATech, OSU v. Nebraska, and (potential future SEC team) MO v. (better than anticipated) Kansas State

Brantley isn't playing, which has the oddsmakers scratching their heads for now.

I'm assuming that the games chosen are mostly SEC games and then the biggest matchups from other conferences, usually what is going to be on TV?  That at least gives us some added interest when watching those games.

So far ya'll have done an excellent job selecting the games.

I am in a meeting right now but hopefully I can get them up pretty soon.   :sleep:

Then I look at who the other sec teams are playing.

Then I check for big matchups in the top 10.

finally I try and make sure the kickoff times are nice and spread out and last all day,  which is why there is usually a pac-12 game.

I just used the new page to enter my picks and I remembered that there are still a few cosmetic tweaks I wanted to make.  I will try to get that done this week.  The pages are fully functional, I just wanted to tweak a few things to make them easier to use:

1.  The page where you save your picks does not give you any indication of who the home team is.
2.  The page where you view your picks does not give you any indication of what the point spread is.

In both cases, you can look at the sidebar block on the left side of the page to get all of the info.

3.  If you have a big computer screen it is hard to tell which game you are entering your pick for because the select box is so far away from the question.  I will put this in a grid with alternating row colors so that it is easier to follow.

I just put in the final for the Clemson game.  pmull and Marshal Dillon are still perfect so far today.

I picked the Boogs too.  I figured if they lost by more than 10 I'd be happy anyhow.  I was.

The deadline is now on Sunday nights at 11:00.  I only had it Wednesday last week because it was the first one and it wasn't even ready until Monday morning.  I can change the deadline next week if that is a problem for anyone.  I set it up on Saturday night after I put in the last pickem score, so it should be there all day Sunday even if you get up before sunrise.

I would say to just send me your top 15 Ricky and I would put them in, but I don't think it would be good to change the poll after people have already looked at it.

I have final scores in for 5 games now.  4 people are 4-1.  I started 0-3 but I think I am 2-3 now.

I am holding up the entire group from the bottom this week.

My grandma is OK considering.  She left the hospital today to go to a place with even more nurses and care.  My uncle (her son) is very wealthy and has spared no expense this time.  She was in a nice, but typical, nursing home.

When she came out of surgery she recognized the people around her and asked for another one of my uncles (the younger one who is in and out of trouble).  That is all positive.    Thanks for the t's and p's.

I was sure I was going to be 10-0 this week.  Being only 1 game from breaking even is not bad really.  It is only the bottom score because the ENTIRE forum did very well this week.  Only 3 people where 4-6, and everyone else was at least 5-5 or better.  All 5 spots on the leader board where 8-2.  We've never had more than one person get 8 or more right in week if I remember correctly.

I thought that offensive genius CCW would run all over Auburn by putting Trey Burton in at QB and just running the ball and throwing some short high percentage passes.  Auburn can't tackle if their life depended on it.  But no, he insisted and trying to pass the ball with a pair of freshman QBs.  You don't have to tackle on an incomplete pass.

3 games in now.  It looks like Arkansas let the whole board down.  None of those 20 had Ole Miss and now they are all 2-1.  I don't think anybody on the board had Ole Miss.

Ole Miss got no love from CRS...they were the only team that didn't get at least one pick out of 26 pickers  ???

I just saw the highlights.  They actually had a chance to win that game.  They scored late and got the onside kick, but then threw an interception with about a minute and a half to go.

Well at least we all missed the Ole Miss pick.  I'm losing at this again.  Terrie, you winning again?
