Title: NCAA to meet soon regarding immediate eligibility for transfers
Post by: Hannibal Lecter, MD on January 14, 2018, 02:52:10 PM
This could have a HUGE impact on college sports. I don't see how a wide open transfer policy would be good for anyone, especially when the Power 5 schools have made scholarships a guaranteed 4 years. If the school is committing, the athletes need to have a reasonable amount of conviction about their commitment as well.

The NCAA will meet soon regarding immediate eligibility for transfers, multiple sources have informed FanRag Sports. The main point of discussion in these meetings will be that if a student athlete earns a certain GPA, he or she would be eligible to transfer immediately without a sit out year.

One source told FanRag Sports that while “nothing is official,” the expected GPA for a student athlete to earn immediate eligibility as a transfer would be either a “2.7 or 2.8.” Two other separate sources said that if this rule is passed, it would go into effect on August 1, 2018.

One other topic of discussion that will be voted on at NCAA meetings will be guaranteeing a scholarship for the length of the graduate program as it relates to graduate transfers. Most graduate programs are for two years, meaning that if a program wanted to add a graduate transfer it would then have to guarantee the scholarship for two full seasons.

This proposal would turn recruiting into a total zoo.  Almost every HS sr or college player could be a recruiting target EVERY YEAR.

I think students should be allowed to transfer immediately if (1) the head coach leaves, (2) the term of the student's scholarship ends, or (3) the student graduates and wants to pursue an advanced degree.

Not sure why they are considering tying it to GPA.   Allowing transfer based only on minimum GPAs could create chaos.  (And why shouldn't failing students be allowed to immediately transfer to an easier institution?  Like from Vandy to FAU.)

Agreed.
