Are the accomplishments of CNS more impressive than CBB?  If you look at it CB did not have the scholarship restrictions that the present day coach has to work under.  This is in no way saying CB was not a great coach.

Seriously though, that is a good question to think about. I don't know that CNS has been MORE impressive. Yeah, there were no scholly restrictions, but that was true for every school during CPB's time. Those players could have gone to any other school, but chose to accept an offer from the Tide and to play for the best coach in the country. Plus, as we all know, great in HS does not always translate to college. Great coaching was a necessity. Now, having said all that, what CNS has done in the past few years with all the restrictions the NZAA has now  is nothing short of remarkable. In the end, I think you just have to say that each did well in their particular eras with the regulations that were in pacle at each time.

I'm barely old enough to remember CBB.  I was 8 when he died.  I do remember, when I started watching Bama football at age 5, that I had the impression even then that we were the best team in college football and that we were just always supposed to be number 1.  We had just come off the back to back NCs in '78 and '79.  I think we're probably getting back to that now with the younger generation.  I would like to know, though, how much influence CNS has over life outside of football, like CBB apparently did from the stories I've heard.

Following college football can be stressful.  All of us suffered through disappointing seasons, and those of us old enough to remember can cite numerous examples.

But today we are riding the crest of the best of Alabama football.  Enjoy it while you can.  It's never been better during the past 40-50 years.

It's tough to compare due to different eras and scholarship restrictions. Both were (and are) dominant in their time. Glad both decided to coach the Crimson Tide!

My 2 cents, FWIW.  We won't know until Coach Saban's career is over and even then there will be room for debate.  Bryant had more players, true.  But Saban has to recruit better players than the rest of Div. 1 to compete for National Championships.  Plus, it is what you do with them that really matters.  Both are/were master motivators, strategists and tacticians.

Just really, really glad to have been around for both!

HSCOACH- Good question.  Helps pass the time til National Signing day.  Be working on another one for the time between NSD and Spring Practice!
