Title: POLL: Should we have a Politics Board?
Post by: SUPERCOACH on March 03, 2011, 12:30:43 PM
Some people would like a politics forum, so I thought I would take a poll to see what the consensus is.  However we reserve the right to veto the poll results if we think this is going to stir up too much trouble, or even shut down the board later.

But this is our forum so I wanted to hear your opinions.

Thanks.

This one is way tougher.  If we want to stay consistent with our goal, which is a pacle you can read with your kid around or at work, then it will have to have some pretty strict rules and mature members.  It can get crazy for sure.

I have to agree with ssmith on this, I would love to see a political forum, but, some people have a very difficult  time expressing themselves in a mature manner when it comes to politics.

I voted sandwich on both politics and religion. I come here for sports. As a peripheral, a computer discussion would interest me. News you can use.

Politics is such a volatile subject. As ya'll know (or maybe you don't) I moderate message boards/blogs as my full time job. The majority of my work is for a major news agency and Politics are by FAR, the hardest to moderate. If we do have one, I agree that it should be closely and strictly moderated.  Differences of opinion are good but insulting one for their belief is not so fine. People tend to get over passionate about Politics and they turn it into a "ME vs YOU" attack real quick.  If the moderation can stay more strict in the board, I think it could work.  And I don't mean "nazi-like" moderation (I get accused of that almost daily).. Just keeping it on TOPIC and not on insults and personal digs.

Would you speak with CNN and get them to lift my ban? I am sorry about saying they all sit around in smelly bathrobes.

Actually, my ban is over. Now they have it so I have to sign in every time I post.

Well, we only ban for repeat offenders or idiots who believe that spamming viagra is acceptable!  I'm always amazed by what some people post and then wonder WHY their post gets removed and/or they get banned.

Agreed. A political forum can be a very useful pacle to express ideas and debate in a rational, calm manner. I think the mods will have to use a heavy hand on it, though, to make sure people don't get into shoot outs, like some did over on TideSprotz.

Ok, so I just remembered why we had a political forum at tidesprots.  People talk about politics anyway.  And it can take over the general area, especially during an election.  So taht is probably the biggest argument to have one, to keep them separated from the rest.

What general just added to me is absolutely the reason for a politics board. RTR!

I would like to remind everyone please in as humble of way as I can, that any items on the Forum that you are not interested in please don't read or maybe even you wouldn't want to visit that Forum after it has been set up. We know that the political and religion and other if provided will all be seperate eventually from the Quad. JMHO. RTR!

Well guys, this one was a toss up.  I will go ahead and put one up since the mods seem to support the idea.  But if things get out of hand, we may have to shut it down later.

Having said that, I really don't see things getting out of hand with the group we have right now.  This is by far the best group of people I have ever hung out with on a forum.

Now the only problem is we have to come up with a name.  Does anybody know what building(s) are associated with the SGA on campus?

LOL +1 for that.

I think I am going to go with the President's Mansion.  It is not really a political building nor associated with student government, but it is a well know landmark on campus and it has the word "president" in it.  :)
