What a great broadcaster. I remember listening to him call Vandy basketball games when I was little. 30 years later Ernie Keller, who worked with Munson on the broadcasts, told me he was the only basketball play by play announcer he'd ever seen who never missed a player that touched the ball.

RIP Larry Munson

1338  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: GS vs Bama game notes: on: November 20, 2011, 03:37:55 PM
Glad you felt like sharing your notes.  As I've said before, I look forward to reading your insights.

Did you (or anyone else) see what happened on the Will Lowery injury?  I saw this afternoon that it is an ACL and he's done.

Follow the doctor's advice!

She could not have been thinking.  If she had, she'd have called in sick and gotten a special judge in who was a Pitt grad!

1343  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Coach Saban outcoached, I think not! on: November 09, 2011, 04:41:30 PM
If you've been listening to Coach Saban this week (or for the last 5 years) his coaching has been all about execution.  Doing the little things right leads to the big things going right.  The penalties, misalignments, and turnovers were the result of little things not being properly executed.  The players were properly coached.  Unfortunately, they didn't execute.  And Coach Saban took responsibility.

Focus and go BEAT THE BULLDOGS!  ROLL TIDE!!!
1344  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Penn State Officials Step Down Amid Child Rape Scandal-NEW: Copy of Report on: November 08, 2011, 11:25:09 AM
Coach Crisp - I read and posted the story with the mother's interviews before I saw your post.  I've removed my post so as not to duplicate.  This is just so sad.  I was foreman of our grand jury earlier this year and we heard a case about a 70 year old man who raped his granddaughters until they turned thirteen then went to the next youngest.  He's a retired MINISTER!  Wonder how many other little girls he raped over the years?  We indicted him on 40 counts with his grandaughters.  There's no hell hot enough for people in authority who rape children!

HSC - thanks for the game notes.  Always look forward to them on Sunday.  Is it just me or is the HoneyBadger overrated?  And I am not just talking about the cheap shot on Dre.  I thought he got taken to school several times last night by what many think are kind of average BAMA receivers.
1347  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Interception, Reception, or Simultaneous Catch? on: November 06, 2011, 07:30:29 AM
On the non-catch/interception, it wound up being called and interception.  I think incorrectly and Lou Holtz, FWIW, agrees.  It stands as an interception.

Anyone heard anything on the status of Dre, Maze, Jones and Steen for Miss State?

Long, but my wife's favorite memory of Bear Bryant:

In October, 1974, Betsy, Jane, Frank and I decided we had to take a road trip to Knoxville for the Alabama-UT game. Betsy, Jane and I had graduated from Alabama the spring of that year. We did not have tickets; we did not have a place to stay, but we were going to Knoxville. So that Friday afternoon we piled into Frank’s Toyota – the car that had the distinction of having only one remaining original body part – the roof – and we hit the road. A friend of Frank’s who had a place to stay and a ticket to the game rode with us. We girls resented Frank bringing “an outsider.” (We were so obnoxious that Frank’s friend found another ride home. We always suspected it was the “wet willies” we gave him from the backseat.)

It was the ultimate football weekend road trip, but the sake of some brevity, suffice it say we found a hotel room at about 1 a.m., calling from the Knoxville Krystal. We registered as Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wade. We told Betsy and Jane to make themselves small in the back seat, so if asked, we could say they were our children. Boy, were we naďve.

Game day we made our way to “the Strip”. We spent the first half in a local watering hole, Sam & Andy’s, where we watched the game on TV. Sam & Andy’s only served beer, but Jane and I, always concerned about calories, decided we had to drink scotch. So, we would sneak under the table to mix our drinks. The four of us decided that we could just walk into the stadium after halftime, but realized we would need to replenish our supply of alcohol – we certainly could not run out. So we made our way down Cumberland Boulevard to a liquor store where each of us purchased what we thought we would need. Then we proceeded back up the street to the stadium, carrying a grocery bad filled with liquor bottles and we just walked right in. We ended up sitting on the steps, single file on about the 50 yard line in the UT section. As we passed the scotch and the bourbon back and forth in our single file seating arrangement and then proceeded to cheer for Alabama, we were not the most popular people in our section. As the outcome of the game became evident, and people left early in the 3rd, we ended up with some great seats.

Naturally Alabama won and so we had to go stand outside the Alabama locker room to se some of our friends who were still playing there. But first, we stopped at midfield and mixed our drinks to toast another Alabama victory, and then we waited outside the locker room. Richard Todd came out and talked a few minutes, taking sip from one of our cups. He then went back in to tell David McIntosh were were there. So out comes McIntosh. We all hug, and McIntosh takes a few sips as we are talking. David had his back to the locker room door so he didn’t see Coach Bryant walk out. Bryant walked over to our group, said hello to the 4 of us and just looked at David who would have preferred to melt into the concrete.  He said something about the bus leaving the stadium in a few minutes so we knew it was time to say out goodbyes.

A few days later McIntosh called to say that Coach Bryant made a point of sitting next to him on the bus trip to the airport. He never said a word to David about the alcohol; in fact he didn’t say much of anything to David on that ride. David got the message.
