Hmmmm..... Not sure how I feel about this one.  On the one hand, if they've gotten their problems straightened out and are really trying to turn things around, it's good that the NCAA recognizes that.  On the other hand, what's the point of the NCAA handing out punishment if they're going to backtrack later?  Of course, the NCAA is not known for being fair or judicious.

I like it.  I think it's about time the NCAA started to reward schools for compliance instead of their normal habit of pretending to enforce their rules...

I'm for doing away with all the rules, then no one will get punished.

Well I think the NCAA is doing the right thing. I notice the players who jumped ship, haven't done very well at their new places. I can't see how this punishment is doing anything for the kids they have out there this year? RTR!

I am curious if there is a precedent for reducing penalties? Also, would they do this if it were Alabama or Ohio State? I didn't seem them rushing to decrease our penalties back in the day.

I know people are in jail. Lawsuits and settlements are being paid to victims. The school and administration broke every ethical, moral and child abuse law possible. But what NCAA rules did Penn State break?

Penn State has cleaned house. There is no one left within the athlectic department or school administration with ties to the scandal. The NCAA has decided to slowly reduce the scholarship restrictions. The scar this leaves on Penn State will last forever but there is no need to try and destory the football program.

IMO you can not compare anything that happens in this case to normal NCAA scanctions.

USC is pleased to hear about Penn State's penalties being reduced.

Quote
USC athletic director Pat Haden, meanwhile, focused on the future, looking for changes that would ensure consistent penalties for all schools.

"Like the rest of country, we have just learned of the NCAA's actions regarding the restoration of some of Penn State's scholarships," Haden said in a statement released on USC's website. "As you know, the NCAA is currently engaged in the process of evaluating and potentially reforming its governance structure. We look forward to having a positive impact on that process.

"We also are hopeful that the NCAA's recently-enacted enforcement and penalty reforms will result in a consistent and fair enforcement and penalty process for all its institutions. USC will continue to work cooperatively with the NCAA towards that goal."

That's why the hammer should remain on Penn State. We're not talking about "compliance issues," this is about child rape and a coverup by higher ups in their administration. Even when they knew they had problems with Sandusky, even in retirement, he was allowed to keep coming to the campus where he was raping the boys. This is the worst scandal in the history of college football. PSU did what they HAD to do, not because they wanted to, & fire everyone and try to start over, but that does not excuse the behavior of the administration & Joe Paterno. Sorry, no mercy. Remember those little boys when you think about wanting to give PSU a break.

MD, I respect you opinion, but like pmull said those DIRECTLY involved in this have or are being punished. The current players and Bill O'Brien had NOTHING to do with this. If this was paying players or some other NCAA violation, then certainly the NCAA has the right to step in. But this isn't intercollegiate athletics; this was a criminal investigation, and while university officials were involved, it did not affect the game on the field.

And yes, I have a 6-year-old, so I DO know what it is like to have children. Believe me, if what that disgusting old man did to those children was done to my child, the perp had better pray that the police caught him before I did. But if some colleagues of this person had nothing to do with the situation, I wouldn't go after them.

Penn State, through its President, a Vice-President, AD, & football coach ignored and/or covered up child rape. They were representatives of the university. In order to send a very loud message to the rest of the idiots at universities who thinks a coach is a god and and can not be touched. The priority is on protecting children, not protecting a universities' reputation or big name coach. SMU got the death penalty for a whole lot less, even after they "cleaned house." I hear what you all are saying, but I believe it to be misguided. Try talking to a child who's been raped, then come back and tell me you feel the same way about Penn State.

I have to agree with some that PSU got what they should have gotten. It may have been labeled as a crime but the athletic department is very much responsible for what happened there and they are as responsible to the NCAA as Sandusky was to the police department.

The argument for the players there now has no legs, everytime there has ever been a punishment leveled on a program by the NCAA, all of the players suffered the consequences not just the guilty party. Alabama can attest to that very much so, how bad did the NCAA hurt their football program?

I totally agree about the kids that were molested, they are the ones that are suffering the most and will suffer for the rest of their lives. Who really gives a rip if penn State ever wins another football game.JMO
