Whew, I didn't know my heart rate could get so high until A J was laying on the ground and making no attempt to get up. My first thought was that Phillip Sims is no longer on the team now it will be show and tell of how Bama must handle the situation without A J at quarterback.

Blake Sims is a good athlete and does a good job when he does get to play, but he is no McCarron and nor is Ely. I think either would do well until Bama has to face the better teams in the conference and as well as any of the better teams nationally. Bama has a good running attack but still has to have an effecient passing attack to make the running game possible.

I definitly think the backup QBs will get more snaps starting this week after the scare yesterday, AJ is good but not invincible. We all have seen how the running game has suffered with Lacy having the injury bug slow him down, Yeldon is good but he's not a Lacy just yet and the same goes for the offensive line losing a couple of their starters. This team needs everyone healthy for them to reach their lofty goal of #15.

But the key denominator of this team is McCarron, there is no quality replacement for him and Bama's chances of going all the way without him minimizes to the max. Bama has been riddled by the injury bug all year, so let's hope yesterday will satisfy that nagging problem and the team can be lucky enough to finish the season without anymore major injuries or near misses, my heart can't take it. Roll Tide!!

A point well made, J. I was sick at my stomach when he was on the ground and very relieved when he returned. I sure hope he's healthy for UT.

QB depth was a concern going into the season and it is still a concern. AJ showed guts to come back and play after his injury. We have to develop a second team QB that can play winning football in big games. Simms has looked good in mop up duty but he has not had to throw the ball. You would have to think Simms and Ely will get many reps this week. We recruited them for a reason so I hope they are up to the task if needed.

Thanks for the link Chech, a very good read. Let's hope that there's no swelling in the knee.

Well, actually, gingerly doesn’t really describe it all that well. Holding tightly onto the rail, like a child who has put on roller skates for the first time, he would step quickly with his good leg and then almost slide his right foot along the ground.

that doesn't sound good , not at all .

btw ... who is Mark Edwards ? any background ?

Doctors use the word "sprain" anytime there isn't a more definitive diagnosis.  You'll frequently see "sprain" for back injuries that later turn out to be a herniated disc.  And for knee injuries where physical manipulation doesn't reveal anything definite.  It could be a small tear in the MCL, could be something stretched but didn't break or tear.  Only an MRI can show what's really going on.  (It's not just a "bruise," despite what was said.)  The fact that AJ went back out there is a good sign.  The way he was walking after the game, though, that has to hurt.  I know it hurts, and hurts for some time before it goes away.  He'll be hurting for at least a couple of weeks, and playing football won's make it better.  But it looks like AJ is going to be playing through the pain.

He ia a writer for The Decatur Daily. He is an excellant sports reporter. He is also the Sports Editor for the Decatur paper. Newspapers are stuggling so everyone has to wear more hats I guess. I agree he is doing a good job with the blog.

He showed absolutely no signs of this when he came back in the game.  My guess is that it started swelling on him and by the time he came out of the locker room he was in a lot more pain than he was during the game.  I just can't see a guy that has to hold a rail to walk and then hop over to a crate being able to play football without at least limping a little bit.

I watched that play over and over probably a dozen times yesterday and saw no twisting, or helmet to the knee, or anything other than his exposed knee hitting the ground.  And that is exactly when he immediately grabbed for his knee and assumed the fetal position.  It is hard to say what the injury is, but to me it sure looked like it occurred when his knee hit the ground.

I hate to say this, but I have personal experience with what he is describing. It's called a torn meniscus. Even after surgery, walking on an incline or decline (slanted walkway) is absolute torture. Every step you take is like someone jabbing you in the knee with an icepick. You will be hanging onto a rail and pushing off with your arms to support your weight. What they are saying about  AJ is exactly what I have gone through. I had surgery at Dr. Andrews place in St. Vincents, Bham, so it was not some country doctor who did my surgery. Sure hope I am wrong. I had the injury for 3 years and it progressively got worse, but I don't play football, either.

When your injury first occurred, did you have the pain immediately or did it take an hour or so before you had trouble walking?  Do you think AJ could have come back in the game with that kind of injury?  I have absolutely no personal experience with knee injuries.

My right knee was bothering me and I don't remember any kind of traumatic event which would have caused it. It just kept hurting and hurting for 3 or 4 months, so finally, I went to Andrews place and saw one of the doctors. They did all kind of painful things to my leg and knee as part of the examination (which I observed them doing to AJ), after I had told them my symptoms. After their examination, they said I had a torn meniscus. They said there is nothing they can do except exercises and maybe rehab, but most likely only surgery could help me. Since I was dealing with the pain so well, I said no to surgery. Three years later (2012), I jumped down three stairs in my house while playing with my grand kids and I felt a rush of pain. Now, it was really hurting. I waited about 2 months and went back to the doctor. They said I probably had a partial tear before, but now I had torn it for sure. I had an MRI and yes, I had a torn meniscus.

Did I have a problem walking or was the pain immediately?
No, the doctors and I believe mine may have gradually torn over time and was not an immediate event. However, the jumping down the stairs was immediate, and I was limping right away, but like I said, I am over 50 and not in football playing shape.

Could AJ have come  back into the game? Yes, since he is 30 years younger than me and had that brace on, I think he could endure it. However, he won't last long if he takes another hit or tries to turn or pivot sharply. The pain is unbelievable when you try a quick pivot.

I really hope I am wrong, but that description by the reporter is perfect for my injury.
